Almondsbury Town remain unbeaten this season following a dramatic injury time victory at Westwood Park last Saturday. However, hosts Cowes Sports feel as though they have been ‘cheated ‘ of a place in the next round of the competition following two very harsh decisions against them in TEN minutes of injury time at the end of the second half.

Having made the long trip from Bristol, it was not surprising to find the Almondsbury somewhat on the back foot in the early stages, Jamie Dyer’s shot being palmed away by the visiting ‘keeper John and Harry Dye’s header form the resulting corner flying inches wide in the 4th minute. The Yachtsmen failed to make the most of their bright start in what turned out to be a rather drab first half, the only other chances falling to Alex Harvey who could not quite reach Joe Butcher’s cross(36) then shooting straight at the keeper(41) when through on goal.

The home side took the lead just 5 minutes after the break when Joe Butcher’s exquisite pass inside the full back found skipper Gareth Bricknell who was pushed over by the defender, the Assistant flagged for a penalty which was given by Referee Barter, much to the annoyance of the visitors. Gareth BRICKNELL picked himself up to fire the spot kick into the net. Centre half Martin McDonough went on a terrific run exchanging passes with Joe Butcher before seeing his shot parried.

On the hour Almondsbury drew level when, having only been on for a couple of minutes and with virtually his first touch, Kane INGRAM netted with a shot from 10 yards, but, having seen a 67th minute lob hit the Cowes crossbar, the ball fell to Tom Dye, his ball down the line found Max Draper whose precision pass over a defender found topscorer Alex HARVEY he in turn drilled the ball past John to restore Cowes’ advantage, which the looked quite comfortable with throughout the remaining twenty minutes.

Then, two minutes into stoppage time Sam Yelland’s perfectly timed challenge took the ball away from their forward and out for a throw, they claimed a penalty, but Mr Barter signalled clearly that Sam had played the ball, however Assistant Jones flagged for a penalty and much to the amazement of all the Ref gave the spot kick and Kane INGRAM stepped up to coolly beat Chris Norris and appear to send the match into extra time, or so we thought.

In the 95th minute a corner from the Cowes left was headed goalwards by Lee BRIDSON, but appeared to be cleared off the line, however the Officials decided that the ball had crossed the line and the Almondsbury escape from jail was complete, and Cowes were left to wonder what might have been.
