The Yachtsmen won a well contested FA Vase game on Saturday and will play Almondsbury’s local rivals, Almondsbury Town at Westwood on September 19th in the next round.
Lee Davies had the first chance of the game, heading over from Joe Butcher’s free-kick.
Mikey Jones then wasted an excellent opportunity, choosing instead, to square the ball when well placed for a shot.
After twenty-one minutes, Lee Davies failed to clear a long ball and Chris Norris brought down Robert Lawrence for a clear penalty. Lawrence stepped up for the spot-kick, but Norris was equal to it, tipping it round his left-hand post.
Joe Butcher again broke down the left and from his accurate cross, Gareth Bricknell somehow scooped the ball over the bar from five yards.
Just before the break, Cowes escaped when Steven Fitzpatrick sent in a cross, which bounced out off of the bar.
On the hour, Cowes took the lead, when Joe Butcher made himself some space on the edge of the box and fired home just inside the keeper’s left-hand post.
With ten minutes left, Almondsbury’s James Marshall handled the ball on the edge of the box, to concede a penalty. He injured himself in the process and after treatment, he was amazed to discover that he had been penalised. Gareth Bricknell kept his cool and scored from the spot to double the lead.
Just before time substitute Mark Augustus, returning from injury, fired just over from long range but in injury-time the visitors grabbed a life-line when Daniel Cochram lashed the ball past Chris Norris after a free-kick had been blocked.
The home defence were given an anxious few minutes, but managed to survive to the final whistle for a well deserved victory.
