Whitchurch 2 Cowes Sports 1
On bank holiday Monday, Cowes Sports travelled to Whitchurch. Cowes Manager, Steve Taylor, was able to welcome back Harry Dye from his cricketing commitments into the starting line up along with new signing Brendon Arnold.
The game got off to a disaster for Cowes when a challenge in the 5th minute by Craig Insley was judged to have been a foul and the referee pointed to the penalty spot. The spot kick was coolly slotted past Dave Thurman in the Cowes goal.
However, within two minutes, Cowes had drawn level. The ball fell to Aiden Bryan some twenty five yards from goal who struck an unstoppable shot into the top right hand corner.
Cowes Sports had the best of the half with Lee Davies, Andy Watson and Mikey Jones all shooting just wide of the Whitchurch goal. Harry Dye had a header cleared off the home goal line from a Jamie Dyer corner. Despite the many chances Cowes were unable to add to their total.
Almost on half time, Cowes needed the assistance of the post to keep the scores level.
The second half was a scrappy affair with neither team able to put a string of passes together, two games in three days seemed to have sapped the energy from the legs of both sides.
In the sixty third minute, Whitchurch were awarded a corner. The ball was swung into the box causing some confusion amongst the Cowes defenders, and found its way through to the far post where a Whitchurch player gladly took advantage by sweeping the ball into the Cowes goal.
Cowes had a few more chances when Callum Taylor was clear through on goal only for the home keeper to save bravely at the feet of the Cowes substitute. The closest Cowes came to scoring was when Craig Thomas beat the keeper to a Jamie Dyer cross but his header went agonisingly wide. In the last few minutes Dave Thurman made two good saves to prevent the home side increasing their advantage.
