FA Carlsberg Vase (1st round proper) Cowes Sports v United Services Portsmouth (24 September 2011)
Cowes Sports 1 United Services Portsmouth 0
A single goal proved to be just enough to send the Yachtsmen through to the First Round Proper of the FA Carlsberg Vase on Saturday, but the visitors will consider themselves unfortunate not to have forced a replay.
The match started twenty minutes late after the visitors’ coach had broken down and they were immediately under pressure as Gareth Bricknell’s free-kick was nodded back in by Leighton Speechley-Price, but no-one was able to make the vital touch.
The decisive goal came after just eight minutes when Bricknell’s through ball sent Dominic Burbidge racing into the penalty box and his clinical finish found the far corner of the net.
The Sailors should have equalised but Jason Farnsworth’s snap shot went just wide.
After the break, Cowes went close to doubling their lead when Tom Dye’s free-kick came back off the post.
The visitors pressed hard for an equaliser, but the home defence stood firm, with centre-back Charlie Allen earning himself the ‘Costcutter Pan Stores’ Man of the Match award and the Yachtsmen hung on to secure another home tie against Dorset side Gillingham Town on October 22nd.
