COWES SPORTS    25    SHOLING

Former Southern League side Soling brought their strongest available side across the Solent for this pre season game at Westwood Park including much sort after striker Lee Wort who started, as well as having well known forwards on the bench, Ashley Jarvis and Nick Watts.

Cowes were missing Captain Craig Insley as well as Darren Williams whilst Aidan Bryan is still out with a stomach problem.

The home side got the perfect start to the match as they took the lead in the 3rd minute when Danny Hatcher sent in a cross which was headed on by Charlie Allen, the ball found JARED WETHERICK who fired home from 8 yards much to the delight of the crowd. The lead was short lived however as LEE WORT showed his class to equalise for Sholing just five minutes later. In an exciting start to the match the Yachtsmen regained the lead on 16 minutes when Adam Sunsberg’s corner

from the right found JARED WETHERICK unmarked to power a header into the Sholing goal, poor defensive marking that I am sure Manager Dave Diaper would not liked to have seen!!

With the big target man up front causing the visitors defence a lot of problems, in the 35th minute he headed the ball onto Nathan Lewis who fired the ball across the face of goal just wide of target. Just a minute before the interval with Charlie Allen on the ground, Sholings forward managed to fall over Charlie’s leg and Referee Andy Dine pointed to the spot, very soft award, THOMPSON stepped up to score from the spot and see the teams go in level at the break.

H-t 2 – 2

A minute into the second half Cowes nearly took the lead again when Danny Hatcher’s cross form the right was headed back to Max Draper whose goal bound shot hit a Sholing defender and went wide for a corner. Former Yachtsman player, Charlie Smeeton, sent in a cross that clipped the top of the crossbar. Sholing started to dominate Thompson barged his way through the Cowes defence before sending his shot across goal but wide. Then Kevin Brewster had two thunderbolt shots from distance, the first crashed against Joe Winchcombe’s right hand post with the keeper well beaten, the second was straight at Joe who gathered with ease. The visitors finally got their noses in front in the 70th minute when a ball over the top found Cowes defenders lacking in pace as ASHLEY JARVIS who calmly lobbed the ball over the advancing Joe Winchcombe to score. A similar ball found Lee Wort shortly after but although Ashley Jarvis got a touch to the cross keeper Joe Winchcombe dive on the ball to save. The final minutes of the game seemed to be one way traffic towards the hosts goal, Lee Wort appeared to ‘foul’ James Flux, the Referee disagreed, but Joe Winchcombe made an excellent save to deny the Sholing hotshot. LEE WORT was not to be denied though, as two late strikes(82 + 90 mins), gave the visitors a comfortable victory, both goals showed his class finishing.

Despite the defeat Cowes players can be very happy at the way they performed with the game changing in the 70th minute when Jared Wetherick was replaced  and there was nobody to hold the ball up and bring others into play. A terrific game that was enjoyed by all.
