COWES SPORTS ‘A’     43    VECTIS NOMADS XI

In their first friendly game of the season the ‘A’ team took on a Vectis Nomads XI at Westwood Park. Both sides agreed to play 3 x 30 minute thirds.

Cowes started well with Callum Taylor twice setting Ryan Brenchley through with just the keeper to beat within the first 13 minutes, but on both occasions Ryan shot straight at the visitors keeper whilst Jake Winchcombe saw his effort from 25yards also straight at their keeper. Cowes took the lead on 18 minus when Nomads failed to clear a corner and JAMES ELDRIDGE netted from 15 yards. Callum Taylor should have doubled the advantage when he won the ball before lobbing the keeper, but also the bar. The ever involved Callum Taylor was then fouled in the 28th minute, a quick free kick caught Nomads asleep and the impressive left back STUART McCARTHY thumped in a second goal for the home side.

Shortly after the first break Vectis Nomads pulled a goal back when their forward smashed home from an acute angle following some hesitant defending. The visitors should have leveled on 42 minutes but the shot was put wide of the Cowes goal, then Dan Verstraeten fired wide of target when maybe a square ball to George Turner was the ball to play. The young Yachtsmen netted a third when 16 year old Connor Furmidge played in CALLUM TAYLOR to net inn the 54th minute.

Connor Furmidge then had a shot fumbled by Nomads keeper who just managed to scramble the ball away for a corner before he played a terrific through ball that found DAN VERSTRAETEN rampaging down the left, cutting inside before thumping the ball past the keeper at his near post and a 4-1 lead. Nomads RUEBEN BRYAN pulled a goal back on 72 minutes with a 20 yard strike. Connor Furmidge then unleashed a 30 yard drive that their keeper just watched as it crashed against the crossbar. Coen Abouelela was then brought down by Nomads keeper, but his penalty came back off the crossbar to deny Cowes a fifth goal and with two minutes left on the clock a long throw into the Cowes area was lashed into the goal by their forward to make the final score 4-3.
