FAWLEY AFC              1  –  2            COWES SPORTS

Having dumped their hosts for this Hampshire Senior Cup match, out of the FA Cup about a month earlier Division One side Cowes Sports traveled to Fawley confident of causing another Cup upset. Manager Richie Woodburn, on his birthday, made several changes to the starting line up that had beaten Andover New Street the previous Saturday. In came Ross Phelps, Jared Wetherick, Michael Jones to the starting line up whilst Darren Williams returned to the squad following the birth of his son. Craig Insley was unavailable whilst Jordan Browne and Lee Davies began on the bench.

With persistent rain falling throughout the first half Cowes took their time to settle, however the home side looked determined to avenge the FA Cup defeat, left winger Matt Vining cut inside Ross Phelps in the 10th minute but sent his shot wide of Ed Hatts left hand post. Following a 15th minute corner Cowes’ defensive header was only cleared to KEIRAN EARL 22 yards from goal, he unleashed a powerful effort that gave keeper Ed Hatt no chance as it flew into the goal, another spectacular goal conceded, if thats the only way to beat Ed then long may it continue.

The Islanders responded to this setback quite well as Jared Wetherick immediately went close to leveling, Danny Hatcher sped down the line before dragging his shot wide of the right hand post and Jared Wetherick forced the keeper to save at the expense of a corner, but it was the home side that went in at the break ahead.

H-t 1 – 0

Ed Hatt was at his best at the start of the second half saving low to his left and from the resulting corner Roy Johnson drove the ball straight at Ed who gathered well. Referee, Colin Hopkins had a five minute spell where he booked three Cowes players, Nathan Lewis, Adam Sunsburg and Joe Phelps, but off course the home side were angels!!! In the 65th minute Cowes were gifted an unexpected equaliser when a ball from Michael Jones into the area was headed into his OWN GOAL by a Fawley defender under no pressure from anyone, we think he was trying to head the ball for a corner. Boosted by this the Yachtsmen began to get on top and looked a bit more confident going forward. Danny Hatcher broke down the right in the 73rd minute before squaring the ball to the onrushing Jared Wetherick but he could only slide the ball into the side netting. With the game seemingly heading for an extra 30 minutes a ball was played up to JARED WETHERICK, he controlled well, held of the challenge of a defender, before cutting inside and smashing the ball past Ian Moore in the Fawley goal for what proved to be the winner.

The Premier Division club tried to hit back but some resolute defending saw Cowes hold on to their advantage. The only sour note came late on when Adam Sunsburg received a second yellow for kicking the ball away as the Referee blew for a foul by Joe Phelps. A somewhat harsh decision but was no surprise given the way he had handled the game – not one of his best days!!

The victory now sees the Yachtsmen into the second round and a mouth watering home tie with SHOLING on Tuesday October 8th.
