COWES SPORTS         4  –  1      RINGWOOD TOWN

Cowes were looking to continue their winning run against 13th placed Ringwood Town. Manager Richie Woodburn wanted to make full use of his squad making four changes from the successful side at Hythe & Dibden three days earlier. Adam Sunsburg, Ross Gregory, Jared Wetherick and John McKie all started against Ringwood Town replacing Joe Phelps, Lee Davies, Jordan Browne and Max Draper. Joining them on the bench was young Stuart McCarthy who has impressed in the ‘A’ team and more recently the Reserves.

Prior to kick off club Chairman IAN LEE presented the ” PROSPECT FINANCIAL PLANNING “ Player of the Month award that, due to lack of games, covered both January and February. Winner was    JOE ADAMS   Jan-Feb Player of Month 14

If anybody in the ground thought that Cowes Sports only had to show face to gain the three points on offer they were given an early jolt as the visitors had the audacity to take a fourth minute lead as 38 year old recently signed TONY BELLOTT cut in from the Cowes right before beating keeper Will Hunt. The Island side looked to bounce back from the shock of the early goal against them and a superb cross-field ball from Joe Adams to John McKie saw the latter cut inside his marker before shooting at Simon McDougall in the Ringwood goal. Cowes were then lucky not to find themselves two down when Craig Insley rolled the ball back to Will Hunt whose clearance only found a Ringwood player who tried a first time effort from 20 plus yards across Will as he tried to recover his ground, thankfully the ball went wide of the right hand post. Slowly the home side began to take charge and chances came and went. Ryan Gregory sent a free kick towards the far post which Joe Adams headed towards goal, but their keeper was equal to it and pushed the ball over the bar for a corner. Another corner  saw Jared Wetherick win the header this time though heading over. Jared was then put through on goal but was forced wide before the eventual shot was saved  as McDougall kept his side in front. A 28th minute free kick found Nathan Lewis with a free header which he put wide of goal before Jared Wetherick headed straight at the Ringwood keeper. Finally the Yachtsmen got their equalising goal when Ryan Gregory’s 38th minute corner was not cleared by their defence and JARED WETHERICK thumped the ball into the goal, much to the delight of those in the stand. So many times one brings two and just two minutes later the home side were ahead, this time Craig Insley found John McKie deep in the Ringwood half, having tormented right back all half once again he beat him before crossing for JARED WETHERICK to slide the ball into the net for a half time lead.

Tony Bellott was sent free in the 7th minute of the second half, but keeper Will Hunt was off his line quickly to block bravely at the strikers feet. Cowes responded with Jared Wetherick, looking for his hat-trick, shooting at keeper Simon McDougall. On the hour mark the Yachtsmen got a third goal when Ryan Gregory crossed from the Cowes left, Ryan Osman tried desperately to cut the ball out, but failed, leaving JOE ADAMS to stretch and get a touch on the ball before the keeper gathered and send the ball into the goal. “Man of the Match”, John McKie, then set up Nathan Lewis who thought he had scored with a header but a defender appeared from nowhere to divert the ball over the bar for a corner. Sixteen year old Stuart McCarthy was then brought on at left back in place of Ryan Gregory for the final twenty minutes, and he certainly did not look out of place. Joe Phelps and Jordan Browne replaced Nathan Lewis and Joe Adams and both substitutes were involved in the fourth and final goal for Cowes. Joe Phelps chipped the ball through to John McKie who beat his marker before crossing for JORDAN BROWNE to tap home his twentieth goal of the season in all comps and complete a comfortable victory for the Yachtsmen.
