Sydenhams Football League – Division 1 – Saturday March 8th 2014
FLEET SPURS 0 – 4 COWES SPORTS
Cowes made the long trip to North Hampshire for this league match against Fleet Spurs looking to complete the “double” over there hosts having narrowly beaten them at Westwood back in December 3 – 2. Previous games between the sides had always ended with one side winning by the odd goal and although Cowes were in pursuit of their 10th consecutive victory, the home side had won their previous three home games without conceding, so Manager Richie Woodburn was not taking them lightly. Max Draper, Lee Davies, Joe Phelps and Jordan Browne were all restored to the starting XI with Keelan Sainsbury, Adam Sunsburg, Jared Wetherick and Ross Gregory taking their place on the bench.
An early Cowes free kick was only cleared to Joe Adams on right, he attacked the home defence before setting up Max Draper for a left foot shot that flew over the bar. Cowes were then let off the hook by Fleet as a 4th minute free kick caught Craig Insley and Aidan Bryan napping leaving Player/Manager Sam Knowles through on goal with only Will Hunt to beat, but Knowles managed to lift the ball wide of the goal. Max Draper then tried his luck with his right foot but again missed the target. Fleets Jordan Gibbs was then given time on the edge of the Cowes area, his shot cannoned of the left hand upright and hit Will Hunt on the shoulder before looping up and over the crossbar for a corner, another let off for the Island side. The Yachtsmen were to make the home side pay dearly for their misses as they took the lead in the 18th minute when Ryan Gregory floated a corner from the Cowes left beyond the far post where Craig Insley headed the ball back onto the crossbar before it fell to NATHAN LEWIS who fired his side into the lead from around 8 yards. Cowes regained possession from the restart and pushed forward again, this time Joe Phelps thumped a shot goal-wards which home keeper Jamie Cunningham could only push away, JORDAN BROWNE reacted first to smash home a second goal for the Islanders within two minutes and put the visitors in control of the game. For the remainder of the half Cowes pushed to add to their tally whilst the home side worked hard, but neither side were troubled their opponents keeper.
H-t 0 – 2
John McKie was replaced at the start of the second half by Jared Wetherick. Cowes thought they had increased their lead with their first attack of the second half when Lee Davies sent a corner into the six yard box where Joe Phelps headed towards goal only for Jamie Cunningham to produce a fantastic save, at the expense of a corner. Cowes did add a third goal in the 50th minute when another deep Ryan Gregory corner from the left this time found Aidan Bryan who saw his header touched over the line by substitute JARED WETHERICKto crush any idea of a Fleet Spurs comeback. A 53rd minute free kick from the Cowes half into Jared Wetherick was well held up before playing in Lee Davies who netted only to be denied a goal by the Assistants offside flag. Cowes continued to dominate, Jordan Browne set up Jared Wetherick but the latter’s shot was easily saved. Lee Davies again thought he had scored when he sent a shot towards the right corner of the Fleet goal, but yet again Jamie Cunningham produced a brilliant one handed save low to his right to deny the Cowes player. A fourth goal was on the cards and duly came on 75 minutes. Ryan Gregory floated a corner into the six yard box, Jamie Cunningham came off his line but could only push the ball away, unfortunately for him the ball went straight to Cowes skipper CRAIG INSLEY who volleyed the ball into the goal off the underside of the crossbar for his first goal of the season.
Another impressive win for the Yachtsmen, now 12 games unbeaten with 10 wins on the bounce keeping them nicely placed in third place ready to pounce if either of the top two slip up.
