COWES SPORTS    4  v  0    CORSHAM TOWN
Attendance —  98
Westwood Park was the venue for this FA Vase 2nd Qualifying Round tie that saw Cowes Sports entertain Corsham Town, bringing back memories from 2007/2008 when the Yachtsmen overcame the same opponents 3-2 with a Phil Willey strike late in the game. The current side were sitting fourth in the Toolstation Western League Div 1 having won eight of their 13 games so far, so another tough challenge was expected.
Again two changes were made, Lee Davies dropped down to the Reserves whilst Sergio Castellano was away, Ross Gregory and Craig Insley replacing them in the starting line up.

The Toolstation Western League Division 1 side had the better of the early stages, dominating possession without ever really threatening the Cowes goal as the home defence stood firm.
The Yachtsmen began to impose themselves on the game and on 23 minutes Gareth Bricknell saw his shot go narrowly wide following good work by Joe Adams, the visitors responded and from a corner Kieron Gleed saw his shot blocked by a defender then Ed Hatt was forced to block a shot with his feet from Gary Blackwood’s follow up effort.
The breakthrough came on the half hour when a defence splitting pass from Gareth Bricknell let ENRIQUE VILLAR through on goal and the Spaniard kept his nerve to score under the keeper’s body.
Just before the break Cowes stretched their lead as Jared Wetherick and Jordan Browne played a one – two on the edge of their area before the former sent in a cross from the right for GARETH BRICKNELL to head home at the far post.

Five minutes into the second half Enrique Villar again ran on to a through ball and was clattered by the Steve Allison, Corshams keeper, as he the ball coming back off the upright. Referee, Richard Sargeant, awarded a penalty to Cowes but only gave the keeper a yellow card as the keeper had not denied a goalscoring chance, he celebrated his let-off by saving Joe Adams’ spot kick low down to his right.
Cowes were now totally in control and on the hour once again Gareth Bricknell split the visitors defence playing in ENRIQUE VILLAR with the same result as earlier in the game as he slipped the ball past the advancing Steve Allison to score a third goal for the home side.

Four minutes later the Yachtsmen had the chance of a fourth goal when Jordan Browne found Jared Wetherick inside the area and the striker was upended by Sam Pring, Corshams’ left back  for a second penalty and a deserved red card. Although Keelan Sainsbury managed to hit the net, unfortunately it was the big green netting behind the goal as he sent his spot kick high over the bar.
Despite their superiority, Cowes were unable to increase their lead until the last minute, when KEELAN SAINSBURY made up for his penalty miss as he cut in from the left wing and curled a beauty beyond the keeper’s outstretched hand into the far corner of the net.
There was still time for Cowes to create one more chance, when Gareth Bricknell’s cross from the right saw substitute John McKie head over from five yards out.
So a comprehensive victory saw Cowes into the hat for the FA Vase First round proper draw on Monday October 6th.
