FAREHAM TOWN   12   COWES SPORTS

Attendance — 29

The Yachtsmen made the trip across the water to Cams Alders, home of Fareham Town(Wessex Premier) for their first game in the Russell Cotes Cup since 1994/1995 season. 1st Team Manager Richie Woodburn handed over the reins to Dean Ray for the evening also resting some of the 1st team squad giving seven Reserve players the chance to show what they could do against opposition from a higher Division.

Cowes Sports forced the early pace wining a couple of corners. Joe Adams shot high over the Fareham bar before they attacked down the Cowes left, Nathan Lewis doing well to cut out the cross. Joe Adams then broke into the home area before seeing his shot blocked by  Luke Hutchings in the home goal, Jordan Browne sending the rebound past the left hand post. The Creeksiders then nearly took the lead, Jez Conway scooping the ball over his own crossbar to save the Island side and that paid dividends a few minutes later when Cowes took the lead. In the 16th minute, poor defending by the home side saw JORDAN BROWNE pounce to chip the ball over the advancing keeper from the edge of the area. Fareham responded with a similar attack, their forward clipping the ball over Ed Hatt towards goal, but Ryan Gregory was on hand to head the ball over the bar for a corner and keep the Yachtsmen ahead. The home side continued to press for an equaliser and on 21 minutes a low cross/shot flew across the Cowes area but a forward sliding in at the far post could only send the ball past the wrong side of the post from a Fareham point of view. Cowes broke quickly in the 25th minute with Jared Wetherick giving Jordan Browne another chance, his first shot was saved and the rebound sent over the bar. Just a minute later the same combination broke again this time Jared Wetherick’s cross was headed into the goal by top-scorer JORDAN BROWNE to double the lead. The last goal mouth action of the first half saw Joe Butcher cross just evade Jordan Browne as Cowes went in at half time two goals to the good.

Fareham made two substitutions at the start of the second half bringing regulars Wayne Boud and Simon Woods, Lee Tigwell was also brought on a while later. These three players certainly improved the home sides game and they started to create some chances. Jordan Neill sent a 3oyard effort just wide of the Cowes post, a corner from the Cowes right saw a goal-bound header hit a Cowes defender and go for another corner from which Jimmy Wykes was on hand too clear the ball off the goal-line. Ed Hatt then had to be at his best to keep out another effort. Surely it would only be a matter of time before Fareham pulled a goal back! Home skipper then missed a great chance to get his side back into the game when in the 68th minute he found himself 5 yards from goal with only Ed Hatt too beat, but pulled his shot across the face of the goal with the ball going out of play near the corner flag. Substitute Simon Woods then blasted high over the bar from inside Cowes’ 6 yard area before, with ten minutes left, a ball into the Cowes box hit a defender, the home side appealed in hope of a penalty and Referee, after a short delay, pointed to the spot, a rather harsh decision as when asked what it was given for he replied “handball”, “who by” skipper Adam Sunsburg inquired, “the player with his arm up” was the Referee’s answer. LEE TIGWELL stepped up to beat Ed Hatt from 12 yards to give the Premier Division side some hope. Cowes withstood the pressure and should have finished the game of near the end when Joe Butcher went past his marker as though he was not their before crossing to the far post where Jared Wetherick should have headed number three, but he managed to get his boot to the ball ans send it high over the bar. Cowes held on for another impressive victory and earn themselves another away game in the next round, this time at fellow Division One side New Milton Town on Tuesday November 18th.
