COWES SPORTS 4 v 0 DOWNTON
Attendance — 75
With Sergio Castellano unavailable Manager Richie Woodburn brought in Jared Wetherick along with John McKie who replaced Joe Butcher in the starting line up for the League encounter with Downton whom had been beaten 7-0 in the League Cup game a month earlier. The visitors had four different names in their staring line up from the previous meeting, with experienced Declan McGregor returning.
Prior to kick off everyone in the ground stood too observe one minute’s silence in memory of JOHN STIMPSON, former Gosport Borough Chairman/Secretary and more recently a member of the Ground Grading Team for the Wessex League who sadly passed away earlier in the week following a short illness. Cowes Sports FC send their thoughts and prayers too his family and friends. RIP JOHN
The home side were looking for a fast start similar to the Tadley game, although on a soft pitch. It took 14 minutes to find their feet. Gareth Bricknell sent a ball across the park from left too right to Keelan Sainsbury, some saying that he should have sent it down the left touchline to John McKie or Jordan Browne, who in turn played it to Enrique Villar. The Spaniard took on his marker before sending an inch perfect cross into JORDAN BROWNE who met it with a powerful header into the net for the opening goal of the game. An avalanche of goals was expected by the home faithful, but Downton battled hard determined not too have a repeat of their cup defeat and it was the visitors who threatened an equaliser, Dan Telfer sent a shot from 25 yards across the goal wide of Ed Hatt’s left hand post before the same player saw his free kick pushed away by keeper Ed Hatt who recovered to gather as the ball was sent back into the six yard box. Craig Insley then sent a ball upfield to Enrique Villar who picked out Joe Adams, but his header cleared the Downton crossbar. In first half injury time Joe Adams sent a free kick from the left side of midfield into the visitors area where RYAN GREGORY got a touch to the ball to send it past Charlie Aldridge in the Downton goal into the left corner of his goal too double the Yachtsmen’s lead at half time.
H-t 2 – 0
Cowes continued to look for more goals at the start of the second half as John McKie saw his header saved before he attacked down the left, cut inside and test Charlie Aldridge at his right hand post. A sticky pitch and some resolute defending frustrated the home side until the 70th minute when a free kick into the area fell to JOHN MCKIE who thumped the ball into the net for the home sides third goal. Gareth Bricknell then sent a 30 yard shot goal-wards which Charlie Aldridge got down too but could not hold, Jordan Browne was quickest to the loose ball bu could only send the ball into the arms of the visiting keeper. Five minutes from time the Island side added a fourth goal when an excellent ball out to John McKie on the right saw him chip the ball over the advancing keeper and substitute LEE DAVIES smash it into the net from about a yard to complete the scoring and seal a comfortable win.
