COWES SPORTS 1 – 3 TEAM SOLENT
Despite having suffered two consecutive defeats, Cowes Sports still came into this important League game with top of the table Team Solent very confident that they could put an end to the visitors unbeaten League run stretching back to August.
Manager Richie Woodburn had been busy in the week before the game having lost top-scorer JORDAN BROWNE to Premier Division Newport IW, but in return the Yachtsmen welcome back too Westwood Park two former players, both from Newport IW, THOMAS SCOVELL, who went straight into the starting line up fir the Team Solent match, along with JAMES BUTT who was looking too regain full fitness following his broken leg therefore started for the ‘A’ team in their 9 – 0 win against Ryde Saints ‘A’ at Northwood Recreation Ground. WELCOME HOME TO BOTH PLAYERS.
The Island side were stunned in the very first minute when a corner from the Cowes right was swung into the penalty area where an unmarked center half MIKE WHEELER planted his header into the bottom left corner of Ed Hatts goal, a dream start for James Taylor’s students. Cowes responded well with John McKie causing problems down the Cowes left, his fifth minute cross was cut out by Tom Taylor in the Team Solent goal before being headed clear. Cowes were then denied a clear cut penalty in the 15th minute when Gareth Bricknell was fouled in the box, but Referee Rob Ablitt waved play on to the amazement of all at Westwood.
Too add too the home sides misery just five minutes and the visitors lead was doubled when the impressive Students front line combined, Jesse Waller-Larsson worked his way down the Cowes right before crossing the ball into the six yard box where strike partner SAM BYLES clipped the ball into the net at Ed Hatt’s near post. Jared Wetherick then crossed in the 35th minute and Gareth Bricknell nearly forced the ball home but a combination of keeper and defender managed to clear.
So at the break Cowes Sports found themselves two behind as the visitors taught the home side how to take the opportunities created.
H-t 0 – 2
Tom Scovell saw his shot early in the second half tested Tom Taylor but the home side found themselves three behind when JESSE WALLER-LARSSON was played onside to fire home from close range to effectively end the game as a contest. Cowes did respond within three minutes when Joe Adams and Tom Scovell combined to set up JARED WETHERICK to net from six yards or so to give the home crowd something to shout about.
Lee Davies replaced Joe Adams but Cowes were only able to create half chances throughout the remainder of the game, John McKie shooting across the face of the goal pass the far post while Tom Taylor collected a Jared Wetherick shot at the second attempt. In a desperate attempt to get something Aidan Bryan was sent on in the 85th minute, but had to be replaced himself just two minutes later having injured his shoulder in a challenge and is again likely to miss a few months. Also right at the end of the game Joe Phelps received a second yellow card, followed by red for a challenge near the touch line.
Another disappointing day for the Islanders that now gives them a mountain too climb if they want to be involved in the promotion shake up at the end of the season.
