COWES SPORTS    2  v  1   AMESBURY TOWN

Attendance — 102

Tough games for the Yachtsmen are now coming thick and fast as Amesbury Town, second in the table following their home victory over League leaders Team Solent last weekend, visited Westwood Park. Confidence was high and all were “up” for this game. Cowes were forced into one change in their starting line up as Lee Davies(knee) was out injured, so Jez Conway came in to left back whilst Alex Wright and Adam Sunsburg joined Oliver Wilson, Jason Ince and Jordan Chapman on the bench. The visitors were also forced into one change from their previous game with Nic Turpin coming in for the suspended Eddie Perrett.

Again Cowes were asked to make a fast start too the game, but it was Amesbury Town that had the first chance in the first minute of the game when Cameron Roach received the ball on the half way line in front of the stand at Westwood Park before weaving his way through several challenges but could only stab his shot wide of the Cowes goal. This let off woke the home side up, James Butt saw his in-swinging corner cleared off the goal-line by a defender, then the right back sent a long ball forward in the 5th minute which looked to be heading to the Amesbury keeper who started to come to the edge of his area, but he hesitated allowing JOHN MCKIE to nip in to beat him to the ball and roll it past him into the empty net and give the home side the start they had wanted. Keeper Paddy Creese then kept his side in the game with a smart save down low to his right to deny John McKie a second goal. Ed Hatt then showed his worth when he saved Matt Cox’s goal bound shot in the 10th minute. A quiet fifteen minutes passed before Cowes had a chance to double their lead when Jared Wetherick crossed to Jimmy Wykes who laid the ball back too Aleksander Prezpolewski whose shot flew over the bar. The Wiltshire side thought they had equalised in the 28th minute when a ball over the top found Danny Finnigan who eventually struck it past Ed Hatt, but the Assistant’s flag was correctly raised for offside to cut short their celebrations. Just past the half hour mark a Cowes free kick towards the edge of the Amesbury area where Jimmy Wykes headed onto Aleks Przespolewski who watched his shot superbly turned past the post at full stretch by Paddy Creese. Shortly after another Cowes attack saw Nathan Lewis and Jared Wetherick set up John McKie who ran into the area only to be fouled by Alan McPhie, Referee Steven Topazio immediately pointed to the penalty spot. RYAN GREGORY stepped up to once again send the keeper the wrong way and net the Islanders second goal of the game to the delight of the Westwood faithful. Minutes later Ryan Gregory headed a James Butt corner wide of the far post as the Yachtsmen looked to put the game beyond the visitors, but they had to settle for a two goal lead at half time.

H-t 2 – 0

Just as the previous week, the second half saw Cowes take the sting out of their opponents with some excellent defending and still look dangerous on the break. Aleks Przespolewski’s free kick from 35 yards was tipped over for a corner by Paddy Creese, from which the keeper punched clear to Pressie who fired over the bar. The visitors started to lose the plot with around fifteen minutes left and when the Referee turned down a penalty appeal by Amesbury Craig Lewis said a bit too much and was shown a red card, they also picked up five yellow cards as well throughout the game.. In the 90th minute a great run into their area by Nathan Lewis saw him picked out by a great cross but his shot was turned round the post  for a corner. A rare lapse in concentration at the back by Cowes led to CRAIG LEWIS netting for Amesbury Town in the 94th minute, thankfully their was not enough time for them to threaten an equaliser as Cowes held on too another vital three points which keeps them on the tails of the four teams above them.
