COWES SPORTS 4 – 0 FLEET SPURS
Cowes Sports welcomed Fleet Spurs too Westwood Park for the latest installment of the League programme as the home side looked too continue their push for a top two finish.
Cowes were forced into one change to their starting line up, Jimmy Wykes replacing Jordan Chapman(dead leg) who joined Alex Wright and Jason Ince on the substitutes bench. The visitors seemed to be in a run of win one, lose one for the previous seven games and had beaten Hythe & Dibden last weekend(2 – 1), however they arrived on the Island with just twelve players, their sub being their Physio.
A slow start to the game from both sides. The first opportunity of the game fell too the home side in the 9th minute when a free kick from Ed Hatt was flicked on by Jared Wetherick for Alek Przespolewski to fire a shot goal-wards, but Mark Appleby got down well to block. Fleet Spurs Player/Manager nearly put his side in front in the 11th minute as he lobbed a first time effort over Ed Hatt but also cleared the Cowes crossbar. Shortly after it was Cowes on the attack again, Jared Wetherick’s shot took a deflection off a defender forcing Mark Appleby to push the ball over the bar under pressure from John McKie. The Islanders continued too press forward in search of the opening goal, Jimmy Wykes made his way into the Fleet Spurs area but was challenged before getting his shot in, the loose ball fell into John McKie’s path but again their keeper done well to block and keep his side on level terms. the North Hampshire side should have taken the lead in the 27th minute when a corner from the Cowes left saw Ed Hatt drop the ball under pressure, the ball was eventually partially cleared too Ben Clisby on the edge of the area, his shot was cleared off the line by a Cowes defender and the opportunity had gone. Finally, much to the relief of the Westwood faithful, Cowes took the lead they deserved in the 35th minute. James Butt sent a cross from the left into the area picking out JOHN MCKIE who controlled the ball before dispatching it into the left corner of the goal.
H-t 1 – 0
Another steady start to the second half gained momentum on the hour mark when a James Butt corner from the right found RYAN GREGORY at the far post and he calmly planted the ball into the back of the net for his tenth goal of the season. Cowes were well in control now and it did not take long too add a third goal. John McKie broke down the Cowes left before pulling the ball back across the area although behind Jimmy Wykes, but found ALEKSANDER PRZESPOLEWSKI who easily beat their keeper. Minutes later the same combination ended with the latter’s shot rebounding off the Fleet post before Jimmy Wykes smashed a volley against the crossbar as the Yachtsmen looked to improve their goal difference. Eight minutes from time Spurs left back, Adam Nash, fouled Jimmy Wykes near the touchline, the Referee, Craig Robson, felt it worthy of a yellow card, this being his second yellow, a red was then shown. A little harsh most thought. On a rare venture forward Fleet did hit the Cowes crossbar but it was the home side who had the final word in the 91st minute when ALEKSANDER PRZESPOLEWSKI netted a fourth goal for the home side and his sixth goal in five games since joining from Havant & Waterlooville.
Good news for the Island side after the game as results filtered through that Amesbury Town had lost 0 – 3 at home too U S Portsmouth, New Milton had again drawn, 1 – 1 at Andover New Street and Downton had won 2 – 0 at Tadley Calleva leaving the top of the table as below.
