COWES SPORTS      4 – 1    RINGWOOD TOWN

Attendance — 110

Two remaining home games left in the season and the Yachtsmen knew that even two victories may not be enough to see the Island side gain promotion as second placed Tadley Calleva would take second spot if they win their two remaining games although both their games see them on their travels, Hythe & Dibden and Andover New Street, ironically two sides that have beaten Richie Woodburn’s team this season, so all Cowes supporters would be supporting the home sides over the next two weeks.

So to the first of Cowes Sports two most important games of the season. Ringwood Town were the visitors to Westwood Park on a sunny but very windy day. Aidan Bryan dropped to the bench having suffered a tight hamstring at training with Jez Conway replacing him in the starting XI. Ringwood traveled to the Island with 12 available players.

Straight from the kick off the home side attacked and Nathan Lewis ‘s second minute cross saw unmarked John McKie send his header wide of the Ringwood goal. Continuing too push forward Cowes took the lead in the 8th minute in a strange manner. JOE ADAMS was fouled near the left touchline, just in front of the visitors dug out. He got up to send the direct free kick into the penalty area and watched as the strong wind took the ball over a stunned keeper and into the left corner of the Ringwood goal. With any nerves settled a second goal was added just three minutes later as a John McKie cross from the right edge of the area picked out ALEKSANDER PRZESPOLEWSKI who headed home from six yards despite the efforts of Nick Iles in the visitors goal. Cowes were nearly caught out in the 19th minute when Ringwood Town broke down the right, the ball somehow managed to find its way across the six yard area to the far post, with the visitors looking likely too score again the ball was hit back across the goalmouth and gratefully cleared by skipper Craig Insley for a corner from which a forward headed wide of target. The Islanders continued too push forward but had to wait until the 31st minute for a third goal courtesy of a 25 yard strike from JOE ADAMS past the diving keeper’s right hand. A comfortable first half for the home side but they had to be wary of the strong wind blowing from the car park end straight down the pitch for the second half.

H-t 3 – 0

News was filtering through that Tadley Calleva were still goalless at Hythe & Dibden at half time in their game. Ringwood, with the wind behind them, looked a lot better at the start of the second half, but it was the home side created the first chance of the half when Aleks Przespolewski’ s long throw was flicked on by Jared Wetherick for John McKie to head goal wards, but Nick Iles produced a superb one handed save to push the ball away to safety. This proved vital as in the 57th minute Ringwood were back in the game when the impressive PETER RICHMOND-COLE beat Craig Insley before planting a right foot shot past Ed Hatt into the left corner of the Cowes goal. A few jitters from some of the home supporters knowing the next goal could be pivotal. Minutes later Jared Wetherick sent a through ball to John McKie who chipped the ball over the onrushing keeper but wide of his right hand post. Nerves were finally banished in the 84th minute when Jez Conway chased down a ball sent it across the six yard area where Ringwood’s Player/Manager Charlie Pierson tried to clear the danger only to see the ball hit skipper MICHAEL JOHNSON and end up in the back of the Town net for an unfortunate own goal. Cowes saw out the remaining minutes to gain the win they so desperately needed and waiting anxiously to find out the result from Hythe & Dibden which eventually was confirmed the Tadley Calleva had been beaten 2 – 0 leaving the Yachtsmen sitting pretty in the second promotion spot with one game left too play.
