ALRESFORD TOWN    1 – 2    COWES SPORTS

Attendance – 42

The Islanders made the trip to bottom of the table Alresford looking to get back to winning ways after their mid-week defeat at home to Horndean. The Yachtsmen were supported by around 25 people celebrating club Captain Craig Insley’s stag do.

The game took place on a heavy pitch as Cowes were first to show their attacking force when John McKie’s shot at goal was blocked, the loose ball fell to Dexter Malin whose own effort came back off the crossbar, John McKie then set up Tom Scovell who fired just wide of the home goal. John McKie was then through on goal but his effort was pushed away by Michael Weatherall in the home goal. Cowes finally got the breakthrough they deserved in the 21st minute when James Butt’s right wing corner picked out unmarked JORDAN BROWNE who headed home from ten yards to give the Island side the lead. Alresford where brought too life by going behind as John Howard volleyed wide. Jason Malcolmson sent a cross from the left wing to the far post but John McKie’s header was blocked by the home keeper. In the 41st minute the home side drew level when JOHN MULHERN poked home a Ben Stanbrook shot, but the home joy did not last long as the visitors regained the lead on the stroke of half time when another James Butt corner from the right was this time headed home by skipper NATHAN LEWIS.

H-t 1 – 2

The second half saw Alresford push hard for a second equaliser but they could not find that final pass very often as promising attacks broke down and when they did get a shot at goal Ed Hatt did well to prevent them scoring and on the one occasion they beat Ed Hatt the crossbar came to Cowes’ rescue. Late on in the game Cowes had a few good chances to wrap up the game but failed to add to their goal tally, but there first half was enough to take the three points and push the Island side up to sixth in the table, far better than anyone could have expected at the start of the season.
