IoW DFA Saturday SENIOR(GOLD) CUP

Quarter Final – Saturday February 20th 2016

COWES SPORTS    4 – 2    VENTNOR FC

Attendance:- 75

With a spare Saturday available due to the odd number of teams in the Wessex Premier Cowes Sports welcomed Island Division One side Ventnor FC to Westwood Park for this 1/4 Final of the IoW Senior(Gold) Cup and were certainly not going to take the game lightly.

Only Jez Conway(suspended) was unavailable so Manager named a very strong line up that included Craig Insley on the bench.

Prior to Kick Off both sides gathered around the center circle, Cowes were joined by ‘A’ team player Jordan Stacey in order to observe one minutes silence in memory of Gary Stacey(Jordan’s Father) who tragically lost his life the previous weekend. Our sympathies and thoughts are with Jordan and his family at this sad time.

Cowes showed their intentions in the very first minute when Aidan Sainsbury crossed, Jordan Browne’s header fell to Dexter Malin whose goal-bound effort deflected off a defender and over the crossbar. John McKie then sent in a cross that their defender missed , Jordan Browne saw his effort blocked before the ball was cleared, Jason Malcolmson retrieved, crossed to DEXTER MALIN who netted for a third minute lead for the Wessex League side. James Butt’s cross was headed straight at Dan Russell in the Ventnor goal by Aidan Sainsbury. Cowes continued to press forward, Dexter Malin saw his effort blocked before the rebound also had a shot blocked as Ventnor threw their bodies in the way. Chances were created but some poor finishing and some excellent keeping by Dan Russell meant just one goal separated the sides, until the 32nd minute when AIDAN SAINSBURY fired home from 20 yards via a deflection that sent the keeper the wrong way to double the lead. Cowes looked like they would be going into the half time break three up thanks to JORDAN BROWNE who netted after being set up by James Butt. However Ventnor were given a lifeline on the stroke of half time as Cowes were caught short at the back and ROBERT GEE lobbed the on-rushing Ed Hatt to score.

H-t 3 – 1

A 57th minute shot from John McKie was well blocked by Dan Russell, but JORDAN BROWNE was on hand to roll home the rebound and restore the three goal lead. Ventnor though did not crumble and scored a second in the 69th minute when SHANE ILLET hit a 35 yard effort that swerved one way then the other before ending up in the back of Ed Hatt’s goal. Cowes probably should have had a few more goals as Aidan Sainsbury hit their post and John McKie saw his effort crash off the crossbar. Late on Ventnor could have set up a tense finish when their player broke through on goal but trod on the ball and fell over leaving Ed Hatt to pick up.

So Cowes progressed to the semi final but Ventnor can be very proud of their efforts throughout the game. Likely opponents will be the winner of the East Cowes Vics v ECSC game which is due to be played on Tuesday 23rdFeb.
