COWES SPORTS     1 – 1    BEMERTON HEATH HARLEQUINS

Attendance:- 56

Cowes were looking for a positive reaction after a poor performance at Hamworthy the previous Saturday with a repeat of their showing at Bemerton earlier in the season. Quins though had been in fine form recently having won 5 and drawn 2 of their previous nine league games, so a tough match was expected.

A bright start from the home side saw a through ball from Jordan Browne to John McKie whose shot flew across the face of the Bemerton goal but wide of the post. Brad McGookin then glanced a free kick over the Cowes crossbar.  The Wiltshire side took the lead in the 33rd minute when a cross from the Cowes left found SEB DAWES at the back post, his first shot was superbly saved by Ed Hatt but he could do nothing as the ball fell nicely for the same player to blast home from close range. Cowes looked fragile and likely to concede a second goal. They nearly did just two minutes later when Jack Lovell’ s diving header was once again saved by Ed Hatt before the ball was cleared too safety.

H-t 0 – 1

Cowes looked to find a way back into the game, but were forced into a half time substitution with Dexter Malin replacing James Butt. Bemerton keeper Max Frampton did well to push away a corner from the head of Craig Insley. Despite their huff and puff Cowes were not creating any clear chances with Bemerton’s defence coping quite comfortably. However in the 78th minute  Adam Costello gave the Yachtsmen the chance to pull level when, with John McKie outpacing him into their area, he clearly pushed John in the back. Referee Michal Fogt had no hesitation awarding Cowes a spot kick and showing the Bemerton skipper a red card. AIDAN SAINSBURY struck the 12yard kick into the goal via the right hand post.  for the final 12 minutes the home side pushed for an unlikely winner. Craig Insley went on a fantastic run through their defence but could only blast his shot over the bar, then near the end John McKie watched his chip over the advancing keeper come back off the crossbar with Dexter Malin firing the rebound over the bar. So both teams had to settle for a share of the points.
