COWES SPORTS 1 – 0 VERWOOD TOWN
Cowes Sports warmed up for their local derby with a 1 – 0 victory over a hard working Verwood side, who had come back from two goals down in the reverse fixture just two weeks earlier.
The Islanders were determined to show their visitors that they had been lucky to get a point in the previous encounter, when Verwood had come back from two down with less than ten minutes to play scoring lat minute penalty to earn a point.
A very slow start to the game from both sides suggested they both could not wait for the season to finish. It took 28 minutes before either side could muster a shot at goal, Cowes’ Tom Scovell firing a free kick into the midriff of the visiting keeper. The same player again tested Chris Lynch in the Verwood goal, but again fired straight at the keeper. The game changed in the 38th minute when an incident in front of the main stand saw Verwood right back, Dan Evans, kick out at a Cowes forward, he was correctly shown a red card by Referee Paul Roots. However, the three Officials also missed the fact that Charlie Gajic, according to the visiting Officials, had also kicked out in the same incident. Following the sending off Cowes won a corner from the resulting free kick. Tom Scovell sent the ball into the area from the right where EDWARD SANDERS bundled the ball into the goal to give the Yachtsmen the lead. John McKie and Jared Wetherick combined shortly before the break to set the former up with a chance, but the ball flew across the goal and over the bar.
H-t 1 – 0
An early om Scovell free kick in the second half sent Dexter Malin towards the goal line, but his cross was cut out at the expense of a corner by a defender. On the hour a ball into Jordan Browne who tried to make room for a strike at goal, however he ran into a defender who stood his ground. Referee Paul Roots surprisingly gave the Island side a penalty much to the anger of Verwood. Jared Wetherick stepped up to take the spot kick, but Chris Lynch made an excellent save to keep his side in the game. Ed Hatt was having a quiet afternoon for Cowes goal as the visitors rarely threatened his goal. Within minutes of coming on as a 58th minute substitute, Town’s Aaron Atkinson earned himself a yellow card for sarcastically clapping a decision from the Referee. Two minutes later and the same player man-handled Dexter Malin to the ground right in front of the stand, with the crowd howling for another red card, the Referee amazingly only spoke to the player and his Captain. Both sides seemed to settled for the result in the final twenty minutes. The three points keep Cowes in tenth place in the table and means that they will finish no lower than 12th with just two games remaining for the Yachtsmen, home v Newport then away at Brockenhurst.
