For the fourth time during the 12/13 season East Cowes Vics managed to get the better of the Yachtsmen as they secured their place in the Gold Cup Final with a extra time winner, however a stronger Referee may well have issued a couple of red cards given the thuggish act of one Vics player stamping on Max Draper during extra time along with a couple of other incidents that may have also seen a red card issued.

It was Vics that made the better start when Joe Adams broke through the Cowes defence only to see his chip sail over the Cowes crossbar. Dom Burbidge was gifted Cowes’ first chance when a poor clearance from Vics Jamie Bray found Dom some 35 yards from goal, with the keeper out of his goal he tried his luck with a snapshot but unfortunately his effort went wide of target. Josh Appell then found himself one on one with Ed Hatt who done well to push Josh’s shot wide of his goal for a corner. Craig Insley and Max Draper then combined well before setting up Jordan Browne but his goal bound effort was saved easily by Jamie Bray. Vics took the lead on the half hour when a through ball saw JOE ADAMS use his strength to hold of Ash Brett’s challenge before firing past Ed Hatt. No further action of note in the first half so Vics held the advantage at the break.

H-t 01

Sam Yelland broke down the Cowes left early in the second half , his cross saw Ed Hatt fumble, but his defence made sure the ball was cleared to safety. Cowes drew level in the 59th minute when a cross that evaded all appeared to be going safe but a Vics defender upended Aidan Bryan and Referee, Ron Groves, pointed to the spot and DARREN WILLIAMS netted from 12 yards.  Despite trying to find that vital second goal neither side succeeded during the remainder of the half and as with last season’s Final the game went to extra time.

With both teams looking tired Cowes created the better chances, Jordan Browne testing Jamie Bray. the winning goal came in the 115th minute when a cross into the Cowes area saw Ed Hatt come for the ball, but he dropped the ball which eventually found substitute RYAN GREGORY, a recent signing from Blackfield & Langley, who made no mistake from close range and condemn The Yachtsmen to another defeat.

PENALTY SHOOT OUT WIN FOR NORTHWOOD ST JOHNS IN CHALLENGE CUP FINAL

THE COUNTY PRESS CHALLENGE CUP FINAL at WESTWOOD PARK, Cowes  16/04/13

Brading Town F.C. logo.png

BRADING TOWN         3 v 3      NORTHWOOD ST JOHNS  Northwood St Johns win 4-2 on penalties

Westwood Park played host to this seasons Challenge Cup Final and what a game it was, ebbing and flowing throughout.

Brading Town took the lead when JUSTIN HENDERSON’S cross from the left somehow found it’s way into the Northwood net. Northwood responded well and leveled the scores before half time when TOM FOX headed home a corner from the Brading right.

Brading regained the lead when a Scott Lawson long throw from the right skimmed off the head of a Northwood defender to the far post where DANIEL REEVE   headed the ball back across and over the helpless Simon Hayward in the St John’s goal. Brading look the most likely to add a further goal, but Northwood found a second wind and piled on the pressure in search for a second equalizer. With time running out, as the game moved into injury time TOM FOX netted his and Northwood ‘s second goal to send the game into extra time.

Both sides looked a little jaded in extra time with cramp hitting several players. Northwood took the lead for the first time in the game towards the end of the first period of extra time when TOM FOX completed his hat trick earning him the “Man of the Match” award, but Brading would not lie down and themselves pressed hard , but Northwood held on until the 121st minute when with the last kick of the match LUKE HITCHCOX turned in the box and fired the ball into the right corner of the Northwood goal thus meaning the winners of the Challenge Cup would be decided on penalties.

Northwood scored their first penalty kick before keeper Simon Hayward saved Brading first spot kick. Further spot kicks were scored before Brading fourth kick, to keep them in the match, was smashed against the crossbar and secure the cup for the Cowes based side.

The “Man of the Match” award was presented to Northwood St John’s hat-trick hero TOM FOX  by the County Press Editor Alan Marriott, before the Match Officials received their memento’s. Brading Town then picked up their runner’s up medals and finally Northwood St Johns received their winners medals with Captain COLIN MUNNS last in line, lifting the CHALLENGE CUP.

EXTRA TIME PENALTY SENDS COWES OUT OF HANTS SENIOR CUP

Hampshire Saturday Senior Cup sponsored by BSA REGAL GROUP 2nd Round 10/10/12

Totton & Eling Football Club                    cowes

TOTTON & ELING       2 – 1      COWES SPORTS after extra time

The Yachtsmen traveled to Southampton to take on Wessex Premier Division side TOTTON & ELING, currently sitting in 6th place, in this Hampshire Senior Cup 2nd Round tie. Manager Richie Woodburn brought in Joe Winchcombe in goal, Ed Hatt dropping to the bench and Jason Ince into left midfield, Lee Davies moving to left back following Mitch Herbert’s ankle injury against Stockbridge.

It soon became evident that the Div 1 side were going to be playing the football whilst their hosts tended to rely on the longball forward for their strike force too chase. One such instance saw prolific goal scorer Craig Feeney have a shot well saved by Joe Winchcombe, but the offside flag had been raised. Cowes had their first chance on the 1/4 hour when a superb pass by Tom Dye found skipper Gareth Bricknell who controlled the ball before shooting into the side netting. Shortly after a clearance by a Totton defender hit Gareth Bricknell before rolling wide of the right hand upright. Gareth then turned provider as his corner from the left was headed over by Joe Phelps. Another ball over the Cowes defence found Craig Feeney who this time tucked the ball into the left corner of the Islanders goal, but once again the offside flag had been raised so the tie remained goalless. An excellent move down the left saw Lee Davies send in a cross that Gareth Bricknell headed over. Cowes defender Charlie Allen had to be replaced by Danny Cowburn in the 35th minute with a shoulder injury. As chances came for both teams Joe Winchcombe did well to palm the ball away following a corner, Gareth Bricknell fired straight at Tony Harrop in the home goal whilst the last chance of the first half saw Craig Feeney’s shoot across the face of the Cowes goal, but half time came with the teams still goalless.

H-t 0-0

Cowes continued to play the better football and deservedly took the lead in the 51st minute when they took advantage  of some poor defending by Totton & Eling, Gareth Bricknell sent the ball to Jason Ince wide on the left who beat his marker before sending a high cross towards the back post where NATHAN LEWIS out jumped the home defender to head the ball into the goal via the right hand post. However, Totton & Eling responded well and a cross driven in from the Cowes right was tipped over the bar by Joe Winchcombe. From the resulting corner centre half MATT RODRIGUES rose highest to flick the ball past the helpless keeper and level the scores. The better chances still fell to the Island side as Lee Davies broke down the left before cutting inside and smashing the ball against the right hand post, the rebound being sent wide by Craig Insley. Tom Dye, seeing the keeper off his line, then had an ambitious effort from 35 yards but his effort went wide. The Millers goal then somehow remained intact in the 65th minute as Tom Dye blasted a shot which Tony Harrop could only parry clear to Nathan Lewis whose return shot crashed off of the right hand upright and found its way to Jason Ince on the left of the penalty area, he cut inside and shot towards goal, only to see his effort deflect off a defender onto the left hand post before being cleared. Nathan Lewis the headed straight at the home keeper before Totton & Eling’s Craig Feeney head over the bar. For a second time in the game Gareth Bricknell found the side netting with ten minutes left on the clock. In the 86th minute Cowes looked to have scored a second when Tom Dye hit a left foot shot from 30 yards towards the top right corner of the goal only to see Tony Harrop produce an outstanding save to tip the ball over the bar. The final action of normal time came in the last minute when the home side broke down the left and a cross was sent into the area behind the Cowes defence where Craig Feeney looked likely to win the game for the home side, but Cowes keeper Joe Winchcombe managed to get something on the shot to send the ball past his left hand post to keep the score level and send the match into extra time.

F-t 1 – 1

Cowes brought on Darren Williams in place of Jason Ince at the start of Extra Time, whilst Jimmy Wykes came on for Craig Insley towards the end of the first period, but the first 15 minutes was in all honesty very forgettable as neither side created any decent scoring chances.

E-t H-t 1 – 1

A similar pattern in the second period as both teams concentrated, not wanting to make a mistake. However, in the 113th minute right back Max Draper was caught in possession wide on the right, instead of clearing for a throw, by Sam Carter who ran into the area before being flattened by Aidan Bryan’s lunging tackle. Referee Steve Saunders had no option but to award a penalty which STEVE GREEN cheekily chipped into the right side of the net with Joe Winchcombe diving to the left. Not deterred by going behind The Yachtsmen pressed hard for the remaining seven minutes in hope of one big chance coming their way. It came in the final minute when the ball found Darren Williams ten yards out, but he blasted his shot wide of the right hand post and the home side held on to progress to the third round.

Result – 2 – 1

The Island side though can be very proud of their performance and if they can keep this level up they should be pushing for a top four place at least having pushed their Premier Division opponents all the way in this cup tie.

EASY WIN IN HANTS CUP FOR COWES SPORTS

Hampshire Saturday Senior Cup Sponsored by BSA REGAL GROUP 1st Round 18/09/12

                     cowes

RINGWOOD TOWN                 0 – 4               COWES SPORTS

Following Cowes Sports disappointing FA Carlesberg Vase exit at Longwell Green Sports, Manager Richie Woodburn surprised many by naming the same ten outfield players for this Hants Senior Cup tie at Ringwood Town, the only change, an enforced one, being Joe Winchcombe replacing Ed Hatt(ineligible) in goal. So a chance to redeem themselves against their fellow Div 1 side.

The Managers faith paid off as the Islanders marched into the second round with a comfortable win, setting up another away trip to either Totton & Eling in October.

Cowes took the lead in the second minute of the match as skipper Gareth Bricknell floated a free kick from the right towards the far post where center half  DAN COWBURN  side footed into the Ringwood goal. Buoyed by the early goal the Yachtsmen dominated the game and should have added to their goal tally as a string of chances came and went. Craig Insley(looking suspiciously offside) broke through but home keeper Lee Barratt was quick off his line to block, then another Gareth Bricknell free kick was tipped over the bar for a corner before a brilliant run from left back Lee Davies again saw the keeper come out to block his shot. This all inside the first 15 minutes. Darren Williams was next to be denied, his shot being scooped away for a corner, Gareth Bricknell then became the third Cowes player to be denied in a one on one situation, Lee Barratt again the home sides hero. Joe Winchcombe finally had to show his ability as he saved a twentieth minute free  kick at the second attempt. Normal service resumed when Jason Ince and Darren Williams set up Craig Insley who headed wide before he then shot straight at the keeper as Cowes went in at the break only one ahead and a little frustrated.

H-t 0 – 1

More of the same in the second half from the Yachtsmen, three minutes in Darren Williams flicked a free kick into the path of GARETH BRICKNELL who volleyed into the net for a second Cowes goal. A third goal was added on the hour when Darren Williams and keeper Lee Barratt challenged for the ball in the box with the keeper winning, but the loose ball found GARETH BRICKNELL just outside the area and he calmly lobbed the ball into the empty net. Ringwood’s Alex Eley then got his head to a cross but could only head the ball wide of the Cowes goal. Jason Ince then had a shot beaten away with his knees by Lee Barratt. Ringwood substitute Jamie Barwood, who caused a few problems for the Cowes defence, then had a goal-bound effort palmed away for a corner by Joe Winchcombe. The final goal of the game came in the 82nd minute when JASON INCE had a shot that appeared to be blocked on the line by a combination of two home defenders before eventually ending up in the net, but the Assistants flag had been raised to say the ball had already crossed the line.

Despite the scoreline credit must be given to Ringwood’s young side who battled throughout the match, also to Cowes for the way they responded to their FA Vase defeat.

DISAPPOINTING COWES EXIT FA VASE

The FA Vase Logo
FA CARLSBERG VASE 2nd Qualifying Round 15/09/12
LONGWELL GREEN SPORTS 2 – 0 COWES SPORTS
Cowes Sports made the long trip to Longwell Green Sports from the Toolstation Western Premier Division for their FA Carlsberg Vase match.
With Shane East away on holiday and Joe Winchcombe not fully recovered from and ankle injury, the Yachtsmen gave a debut to Ed Hatt, signed from Newport earlier in the week, otherwise the same starting line up from the previous two games.
Both sides spent the early minutes looking at how each other were set up, it was ‘The Greens’ who got the early breakthrough in the seventh minute when Referee Ben James awarded a soft free kick 15 yards outside and to the left of the Cowes box, the ball was floated into the area where CHARLIE STEVENS flicked a header into the right corner of the Islanders goal.  Although a setback, the Yachtsmen tried to hit back but shots from both Joe Phelps and Aidan Bryan flew well wide of goal. Home skipper Andy Summers twice saw headers go the wrong side of the post, whist in between dangerman Chris Dauncey suffered a hamstring problem and had to be replaced by Sam Thomas. The biggest talking point from the first half came a minute from the end when home keeper Dan Jackson  came out of his area to try and clear the ball which appeared to bounce off his thigh onto his arm before going out of play. The Referee had no option but to send Jackson off, much to the anger of the ‘home’ bench and supporters. With no sub keeper on the bench  left back Ryan Gardiner had to don the green keepers shirt. Cowes, with a free kick ideally placed for the left foot of skipper Gareth Bricknell, sensed the opportunity for a equaliser, however right footed Darren Williams bent the ball around the wall but wide of the near post.
The Islanders came out for the second half following a bit of a ear-bashing from Manager Richie Woodburn, but despite being a man short it was the Western League side that looked the more dangerous as both Jack Welling and Mike Hardiman both brought fantastic saves out of Ed Hatt. The closest Cowes came to scoring came in the final 15 minutes as they pressed for an equaliser, their best move of the match though ended with Gareth Bricknell firing wide , then a couple of block tackles thwarted Cowes. Shouts from Cowes for a penalty ten minutes from time when Gareth Bricknell appeared to be upended in the area were waved away by Mr James. Longwell Green then secured the victory four minutes from time as the Islanders were caught on the break CHARLIE STEVENS scoring a second goal.
A very disappointing performance from Cowes as they failed to actually make either of the home keepers make a save.

EARLY GOALS STUN BROCKENHURST IN FA VASE TIE

The FA Vase Logo
CARLSBERG FA VASE 1st Qualifying Round 01/09/12
Cowes Sports  3 v 0 Brockenhurst FC

Despite having not played since their FA Cup exit at Christchurch on Aug 12th Cowes Sports produced an excellent all round team performance to progress to the 2nd Qualifying Round and a trip to LONGWELL GREEN SPORTS on Sept 15th. The only change to the starting line up saw Lee Davies replaced Michael Herbert who dropped to the bench where he was joined by Nathan Lewis and Jamie Dyer who returned from suspension and a trip to the Olympics respectively.
Fellow Sydenhams One side Brockenhurst had enjoyed a fantastic win at much fancied Premier side GE Hamble in a mid week League Cup match and were stronger for this Vase match.
The game was just three minutes old when Cowes took the lead as Craig Insley’s looping header was bundled into the net by a combination of a Brockenhurst defender and DARREN WILLIAMS. A perfect start for the home side and a big confidence booster. Things got better on 10 minutes when Tom Dye spotted Craig Insley’s run towards the right of the Badgers area, his cross into the middle found skipper GARETH BRICKNELL all alone to tap home a second goal for the Yachtsmen, sending the crowd wild and memories of last seasons Vase run.
Shortly after Gareth’s cross cum shot rolled just wide of the visitors goal before a very well timed tackle by Aidan Bryan thwarted a threatening Brockenhurst attack.
Four minutes before the interval Brockenhurst were given the opportunity to pull a goal back when Jason Ince was adjudged to have fouled a visiting forward inside the box, (although it looked like a good tackle at the expense of a corner), however keeper Shane East pulled of a splendid save to deny Warren Kenna from the resultant spot kick and keep Cowes’ two goal advantage intact at half time.
H-t 2 – 0

A bad start to the second half for Darren Williams who was booked in the 49th minute for stopping the ball going out with his hand. Then a minute later Gareth Bricknell broke through on goal only to be brought down inches outside the Brock’ box which earned young full back Dan Mahr a straight red card as last man. Referee Louis Marks initially gave Cowes a free kick outside the box, but after consulting his Assistant, Alex Blake, changed his decision to a penalty to the Islanders, Darren Williams stepped up only to see his effort saved by keeper Scott O’Rourke.
Brockenhurst’s Mark Barker was cautioned before the home side made two changes, Nathan Lewis(61 min) and Jamie Dyer(68 min) replacing Tom Dye and Jason Ince respectively. The Badgers then brought on Jordan Rogers to replace Mark Barker before right back Lee Clark was stretchered off, Mark Clements coming on. Dan Cowburn made a mistake that gave Brockenhurst a shooting chance but he recovered well to block the shot at the expense of a corner. Despite being a man down the New Forest side had their best spell of the match and were denied a goal by a magnificent double save by Shane East, whilst at the other end Nathan Lewis failed to connect to Craig Insley’s free kick and Gareth Bricknell could only lift the ball over the crossbar having been set up by Darren Williams. A minute into injury time GARETH BRICKNELL made the game safe when he ran onto a through ball before slotting it past the advancing Scott O’Rourke and complete the scoring.

COWES SPORTS will now travel to LONGWELL GREEN SPORTS, who play in the Tool-station Western Premier League, on Saturday September 15th.

CHRISTCHURCH PROGRESS AT COWES SPORTS EXPENSE

The FA Cup

FA CUP sponsored by BUDWEISER 12/08/12

Christchurch                   cowes

Christchurch         5 – 0        Cowes Sports

The Yachtsmen’s Wembley trail came to a premature end on Sunday when they were well beaten by a Christchurch side that had finished third in last season’s Wessex Premier League.
Cowes found themselves on the back foot from the first whistle and they fell behind after just six minutes, when Shane East was left stranded by a lofted shot that came back off of the crossbar, leaving JAMES BURDEN the simple task of heading in the rebound on the goal-line.
Ten minutes later, after East had kept a point-blank effort out with his head, the unfortunate keeper was harshly judged to have felled a home striker, receiving a yellow card and was well beaten by the resulting penalty by BEN OSBOURNE
Cowes battled hard to hit back and Jason Ince put Darren Williams in on goal, but his shot was well parried by the Christchurch keeper.
On the half-hour, the home side went further ahead with a sweeping move down the right and the cross was powerfully headed home at the far post by BEN OSBOURNE for his second of the match.
Christchurch were fortunate to survive a couple of scares themselves with goal-line clearances, but they emphasised their superiority before the break when RUSSELL COOKE broke down the right and fired his shot beyond East and into the far corner of the net.

H-t 4 – 0
Cowes put up much more of a fight in the second half, but their only reward was a couple of bookings handed out by the Referee, who seemed to allow the equally robust tackling of the home side’s players to go unpunished.
Chances were few and far between however and though they looked more dangerous after Jimmy Wykes’ introduction, Cowes were limited a handful of long-range efforts.
With five minutes left, the home side’s substitute and much admired teenager, HARRY CORNICK skipped down the left and squeezed in an excellent fifth goal from a seemingly impossible angle.
The Yachtsmen will be comforted with the thought that they will surely not meet any better sides than Christchurch, when they start their League campaign next month.

NEWPORT EASE TO 3rd PLACE IN WESTWOOD CUP

WESTWOOD CUP - 3rd/4th place play-off

NEWPORT IOW 4  BRADING TOWN 1
Wessex Premier side Newport IOW secured third place in the competition with a 4-1 victory that in truth was a little unkind on a hard working Brading Town side.
A very competitive first half saw Newport take an early lead through former Winchester City player Alex PRZESPOLEWSKI, but Brading Town were soon back on level terms when Scott LAWSON smashed home an equalizer. The sides remained level up to half time and then well into the second half, but tired legs  form the Romans and the fact that Newport brought the likes of James Butt, Joe Rayner, Tom McInnes and Ross Gregory on from the bench  saw Port score 3 times in the latter stages of the half. Joe PHELPS was unfortunate to put the ball into his own net before strikes from Tom McINNES and John McKIE won the game for the men from St Georges Park.

PENALTY SHOOT OUT DECIDES SECOND SEMI FINAL IN WESTWOOD CUP

NEWPORT IOW 1 – 1 EAST COWES VICS

East Cowes Vics won 4-3 on penalties

Newport and East Cowes Vics clashed in the 2nd semi final of the Westwood Cup at Cowes in what turned out to be a very tense encounter.
The first half saw possession shared but very few goalmouth incidents, the best opening of the half fell to Vics when a cross from the right found Freddie Knowles unmarked, but he could only direct his header wide of Cameron Farley’s right hand post.
On a lush Westwood Park pitch Vics upped their game in the second half and were rewarded in the 62nd minute when JAKE YOUNIE volleyed home from close range to stun Newport. The Wessex Premier side however responded well and leveled the scores in the 71st minute through TOM McINNES and with neither side able to find a winning goal the game had to be decided with a penalty shoot-out.  Alex Prezpolewski, Corbin Ricketts and skipper Harry Ovnik scored with their spot kicks whilst John McKie blasted his kick out of the ground before Ryan Oatley sent his wide. Although Adam Sunsberg sent his kick wide of the goal Vics triumphed as Wayne Newnham, Andy Ebbs, Aiden Sainsbury and Josh Younie found the target to send them into the Final against hosts Cowes Sports whilst Newport will face Brading in the 3rd/4th play-off.

BURBIDGE DOUBLE SEES HOSTS INTO WESTWOOD CUP FINAL

Westwood Cup 1st Semi Final Friday 19th July 2012

COWES SPORTS 2 – 0 BRADING TOWN
Cowes Sports progressed to Sunday’s Final with a hard fought victory over a spirited Brading Town side in the 1st Semi Final of the Westwood Cup on Friday evening.
The home side began quite well but as the first half progressed hard working Brading came into the match and started causing the Cowes defence a few problems. Dan Vale shot wide from distance when maybe he could have closed in on goal before shooting before at the other end a Tom Dye free kick from 25 yards rattled the Brading crossbar before the ball eventually found its way back to Tom whose effort flew just over the bar.
Cowes looked brighter in the second half and in the 54th minute were awarded a penalty as Town keeper Lewis Murray tripped Dom Burbidge in the area, although a foul may have been committed in the build up. DOM BURBIDGE tucked the spot kick inside the keeper’s right hand post to give the hosts the lead.
Burbidge nearly got a second when a free kick from wide on the Cowes left dipped late and again Brading were saved by the crossbar. Cowes Sports keeper then saved acrobatically to deny an equaliser before the result was settled late on when Robbie Taylor’s deep cross was headed back across goal for DOM BURBIDGE to scramble home a second goal for the Yachtsmen.
