SEASONS LAST GAME FOR SPORTS AS ‘A’ TEAM CRUSH SEAVIEW

IoW Saturday Football League Combination 2  – 11/05/13

SEAVIEW RESERVES    1  v  8   COWES SPORTS ‘A’

Jamie Brenchley led his ‘A’ team to Seaview for their final game of the season without a recognised goalkeeper, so Ryan Brenchley was the unlucky player to don the keepers shirt, having never played in goal before he was naturally a bit nervous. Seaview included in their side former Cowes Sports favourite Daniel Mew.

It did not take the Yachtsmen long to show their intent as a cross from the left just two minutes into the game was headed into his own goal by CRAIG MCMANUS, worryingly he actually celebrated the fact that he had scored. With seven minutes played top scorer JAKE WINCHCOMBE broke through the home defence before firing home a second goal for Cowes. In the 11th minute JAKE WINCHCOMBE added his second and Sports third of the afternoon as the match looked like being a  very one sided affair. As the young Yachtsmen pushed forward in search of more goals a fourth should have been added in the 18th minute when Ryan Chandler went on a storming run through the Seaview defence, easily rounded the on rushing keeper, Tom Pierce, but with an open goal in front of him somehow managed to place the ball wide of the right hand upright for what must be the “MISS OF THE SEASON”, good job it was not a close game!! Goal number four soon came though as LOUIS SMITH fired home from the right edge of the Seaview area following a bit of a scramble in the box on 20 minutes. A bit of a lull in the scoring as Cowes continued to dominate but their final pass was not quite up to scratch. Surely though more goals would come!! They did as a fifth was scored in the 35th minute when JAKE WINCHCOMBE completed his hat trick with ease. Kurt Butt then had a glorious opportunity for number seven when a cross from the left just needed a touch for a simple tap in, but Kurt took his eye off the ball and totally missed it all together, not quite as bad as Chink’s miss, but a good contender for second worst “Miss of the Season”. In the 39th minute KURT BUTT made amends for his miss with a powerful drive from distance that found the Seaview net for the sixth time in the first half before RYAN CHANDLER did finally find the back of the goal in the 42nd minute when his shot squirmed through the home keeper to nestle in the left corner of the goal.

H-t 07

More goals were expected in the second half from the goal hungry Yachtsmen. A half time change for the Ryan’s, as Chandler went in goal and Benchley came out to center midfield. Credit to Seaview who never gave up and got their reward as ANDY PEACOCK’S sublime chip beat Ryan Chandler and pulled a goal back for the hosts. Not much more excitement for the remainder of the game as Cowes seem to lose their way a bit. Robert Iley talked himself into Shaun Yardley’s notebook before he was fouled in the Seaview box from which KURT BUTT added goal number eight with a well taken penalty.  Substitute George Turner then hit a post before full back Liam Webb had the chance to score his first goal of the season, but only managed to knee the ball at the home keeper as he came off his line.

A tremendous season for Cowes’ third string as they finished a creditable third in Comb 2 as a new challenge awaits for 13/14 where they will play in Div 3 of the Island League.

2nd MINUTE GOAL EARNS FLEET SPURS THREE POINTS AS YACHTSMEN BLOW PROMOTION

Fleet Spurs                  cowes

FLEET SPURS                   1 v 0   COWES SPORTS

Following a poor result and performance at Andover New Street the three days earlier, Cowes were hoping to rectify the situation at Fleet Spurs. Skipper Gareth Bricknell, Joe Phelps and Lee Davies all returned to the starting line up, Dom Burbidge, Mikey Jones and Ashley Brett dropping to the bench in an attempt to liven things up.

Cowes were rocked after only two minutes when a needless free kick was given away a few yards to the left edge of the penalty area. The resulting free kick was sent towards the left hand post where CHRIS MUSGROVE was on hand to head home from about a yard. Stunned by going behind so early in the game Cowes tried to respond with Dexter Malin causing the home sides left back a torrid time. Dexter set up Jordan Browne whose goal bound shot was superbly turned away, one handed, by Ryan Bone in the Fleet goal, keeping their lead intact. Shortly after the same combination worked another chance, this time Jordan sent his header at the keeper. The Islanders were lucky not to find themselves two down on twenty minutes when another Fleet Spurs free kick this time found top scorer Sam Knowles totally unmarked just four yards out, but he could only manage to mis-kick and the danger was cleared. The impressive Dexter Malin sent in another excellent cross, this time Lee Davie unable to make contact with the ball. Last action of the first half saw Dexter Malin try his luck with a shot at goal, but unfortunately the ball sailed over the crossbar as the home side remained one up at the break.

Unfortunately Cowes second half showing was awful as they lacked bottle and looked a beaten side throughout. Max Draper done well to deny Fleet Spurs a second goal whilst at the other end Darren Williams had a shot blocked by the home keeper, Dom Burbidge tried to force the ball over the line, some say it was over, some say it was not, nevertheless, a home defender scooped the ball off the line with his hand but the two officials nearest the incident, Referee Stephen Graham and Assistant Chris Gunnell, were able to see the clearest penalty shout of the season.  Amazingly a game in which neither side made any nasty tackles saw Mr Graham increase the Hants FA coffers with SEVEN yellow cards, Cowes ‘winning’ 4 – 3. Says a lot about the standard of Officiating at present.

Another disappointing performance from Cowes, but full credit to Fleet Spurs for holding onto what they had. Cowes’ wows were compounded the following evening when Whitchurch defeated Ringwood Town and Brockenhurst hammered East Cowes Vics 5 – 0.

1st TEAM WIN WHILST RESERVES DRAW IN FRIENDLIES v AFC STONEHAM

PRE – SEASON Friendly Saturday July 28th
COWES SPORTS RESERVES 1 – 1 AFC STONEHAM RESERVES
Cowes Sports Reserves earned a creditable draw against a good young Stoneham sideas substitute OWEN WOODBURN netted towards the latter stages of the second half having fallen behind early in the first from a corner.
COWES SPORTS 5 – 0 AFC STONEHAM
Cowes Sports 1st XI ran out comfortable winners in their latest pre-season game against Hampshire Premier side AFC Stoneham.
Both teams were intent on playing the ball on the deck throughout the game which was good to watch. The Yachtsmen finally broke the deadlock five minutes before the interval when DARREN WILLIAMS was tripped by the visiting keeper as he tried to round him, he got up to send the keeper the wrong way from the resulting spot kick as Cowes went in a t half time a goal to the good.
The Islanders stepped up a gear at the start of the second half and doubled their lead when DARREN WILLIAMS pounced on a defensive mistake, the left back playing a square ball straight to him, before rounding the keeper and slotting the ball into the empty net on 52 mins. Just three minutes later skipper GARETH BRICKNELL was played in on goal before tucking the ball past the keeper and into the right corner of the Stoneham net for number three.
Fifteen minutes from time Aidan Bryan beat the visitors offside trap to break down the Cowes right, he squared the ball to GARETH BRICKNELL who beat the keeper with ease for a fourth Cowes goal.
A fifth goal was added 5 minutes from the end when Jason Ince won the ball in midfield, split the visiting defence with a superb ball which GARETH BRICKNELL ran onto, beating the keeper and rolling the ball into the empty goal to complete his hat trick and the scoring.
Unfortunately the game was marred in the final minute when Stoneham’s number 4, having already been booked, took out Gareth Bricknell on the touchline in front of the stand, resulting in a second yellow followed by a red card. The visiting skipper then reacted with a verbal volley towards the Referee which earned him a straight red. Having finally left the pitch he continued his use of foul language towards the Officials. Not the way you would expect a skipper to act.
