Cowes Sports ‘A’ v Yarmouth & Calbourne
Sandown Res v Brighstone Res
4, February, 2012
Cowes, Isle of Wight, UK
League leaders, Downton had to wait until the last thirteen minutes to impose their superiority over a spirited Cowes side, but were comfortable winners in the end.
In an entertaining, end-to-end first half, Gareth Bricknell’s early chance was deflected wide and Lee Davies’ speculative twenty-five yarder sailed the wrong side of the post. Chris Norris was also in action with a fine save on the half-hour.
Downton dominated the second half, squandering a good chance on the hour and missing out again when Michael Herbert headed off his own line. The pressure finally told after seventy-seven minutes when Matt Redmond scored with an fifteen yard angled drive and six minutes later, a right wing cross was headed in at the far post by Declan McGreggor.
In the last minute Redman gave the home side a somewhat flattering score-line when he knocked in number three at the far post.

Cowes Sports Reserves 2 v BTC (Southampton) 1
The Reserves shrugged off their League woes with an impressive performance to progress into the next round of the Hampshire Intermediate Cup last Saturday and in the process found someone we’ve been looking for some time now – a natural goal-scorer.
The tough tackling Southampton side were second best during the first half, but it ended in stalemate, with neither side able to get the upper hand.
After sixty minutes, Mark Randall brought on Gavin Bodrell up front. Gavin is really a rugby player, but wants to try his hand with the round ball and what an impact he made on his debut. Within a few minutes he beat his man on the edge of the box and curled his shot wide of the keeper to put us in front.
Unfortunately the lead lasted about a minute as Roly Bryan upended a BTC forward inside the box and the equaliser came from the penalty spot. The visitors now looked the more likely winners, but after Jimmy Wykes and Robin Jones had goal-bound shots tipped around the frame of the goal, Bodrell stole the show again with just five minutes left, he picked up the ball on the edge of the box and fired his shot hard and low just inside the near post for the winner.
Mark Randall might struggle to hold on to Gavin if he continues to show that sort of form.
