100 years of football celebrated at Westwood Park

Sunday October 28th 2012

COWES SPORTS 2012 XI   6  -  4   COWES SPORTS LEGENDS XI

The very first football match at Westwood Park took place on Saturday October 26th 1912, a Hampshire Senior Cup tie against R.M.L.I resulting in a comfortable 5 – 0 home win. Prior to the match a ‘ground naming’ ceremony took place and a club flag was raised by MRS CARNT, wife of Club President Mr E. C. Carnt. The ground was named ‘The Westwood Ground’, after the the couples house in Wootton (currently owned by Mark King, formerly of Level 42).

On Sunday October 28th Westwood Park played host to a match between current players(Cowes Sports 2012 XI) and a team of former players that have in the past donned the blue and white shirts (Cowes Sports  Legends XI). Prior to kick off former player MR NORMAN TITCOMBE raised a new blue and white flag bearing ‘WESTWOOD’ across the middle and a horseshoe in each corner. It is said that October 26th 1912 was grey and wet affecting the attendance, well, Sunday October 28th 2012 was also dull and damp, although the rain held off till after the game, but again the attendance was affected.

Captains and Officials 28-10-12

Cowes 2012 showed their youthfulness in the early stages of the game taking no prisoners, Gareth Bricknell’s cross from the right found the head of JOE PHELPS who sent the ball back over Malc Cole and into the net with only 5 minutes played. That lead was doubled in the 10th minute with a superb passage of play, full back Lee Davies was released down the left touchline before sending a cross into the area between defenders and keeper and was met by a diving header by 19 year old JAMES WYKES. He then got his second of the game and a third for the current side as he cut in from the left before firing into the net across keeper Malc Cole. Another good passing move saw Jason Ince speed down the right before rolling the ball back to skipper GARETH BRICKNELL who had the simple task of tapping in number four in the 28th minute from 8 yards. Three minutes later came number five when center half ASHLEY BRETT netted with a header. STEPHEN PERFECT added a sixth goal in the 43rd minute when his first shot was well saved by Malc Cole, but the ball sat up nicely for Steve to head home from 2 yards. Having been totally dominant throughout the first half Cowes 2012 were caught in the final minute of the half when KEVIN MORRIS, looking suspiciously offside, waltzed free before calmly chipping the advancing Ed Hatt to get the Legends XI on the scoresheet.

H-t 6 – 1

With several changes being made throughout the game, particularly at half time for the 2012 side, giving the gathered crowd, with many former players from the Malc McNeish era watching, a chance to see some of the potential 1st XI players of the future, the likes of Brendan Woodward, James Eldridge and Jack Broomfield. Dom Burbidge came close to adding a seventh goal as Malc Cole watched his free kick crash back off the crossbar. Jack Broomfield also hit the crossbar with James Eldridge’s follow up saved and Jimmy Wykes somehow managing to send the ball over the bar with a hat trick at his mercy. How ever hard the current side tried they could not add to their tally of goals whilst in the 70th minute the Legends ANDY BUTLER(Cowes Sports current Vice Chairman and Groundsmen) broke through and also managed to lob the ball over Ed Hatt and into the empty net. Legends sub keeper Roger Grey then saved a Charlie Allen pile driver before KEVIN MORRIS netted his second goal and a third for the Legends. The final goal of the game came courtesy of a brilliant volley from LEE DENT who still showed he knows where the goal is. A great way to finish a very entertaining game.

Following the match players and officials were joined in the clubhouse by several former players and club officials for reunion and a few beers and a buffet, prepared by Julie Potts and her team of ladies, sharing in lots of memories from their playing days at Cowes. Also many photographs were hung around the walls whilst a selection of old memorabilia  such as medals, tickets, programmes along with the ‘Westwood Cup’ and the ‘Gold Cup’ won last season(the cup the clubs keep for the year, not the actual gold Cup). A programme, ‘ONIONS IN YOUR TEA’, was produced by Toby Collard  and some are still available for purchase at the club priced £3.

COWES SPORTS would like to thank everyone who contributed to the day, in particular Peter Jeffery who spent a lot of time seeking former players, Toby Collard, Tony Gibbs, Allan Blackburn, Don Webb, Peter Groves, Rich Insley, Bert Jupe, David Hunt, Kevin Winchcombe and Jean Townsend, daughter of 1930′s Cowes legend Jackie Pearce, who contributed various items of memorabilia towards the exhibition. Also thanks to Mark and Ria King for the photo of Westwood House(used in the programme).

Special thanks go to Malcolm McNeish and John Westmore for helping bring together old clubmen together, to Dale Young for managing the Legends along with current 1st team Manager Richie Woodburn and his squad of players.

The Club would also like to thank the following businesses for their support during Westwood’s centenary season:- WSM Associates Ltd, The Isle of Wight County Press, Island Printers and Wightlink

1st TEAM WIN WHILST RESERVES DRAW IN FRIENDLIES v AFC STONEHAM

PRE – SEASON Friendly Saturday July 28th
COWES SPORTS RESERVES 1 – 1 AFC STONEHAM RESERVES
Cowes Sports Reserves earned a creditable draw against a good young Stoneham sideas substitute OWEN WOODBURN netted towards the latter stages of the second half having fallen behind early in the first from a corner.
COWES SPORTS 5 – 0 AFC STONEHAM
Cowes Sports 1st XI ran out comfortable winners in their latest pre-season game against Hampshire Premier side AFC Stoneham.
Both teams were intent on playing the ball on the deck throughout the game which was good to watch. The Yachtsmen finally broke the deadlock five minutes before the interval when DARREN WILLIAMS was tripped by the visiting keeper as he tried to round him, he got up to send the keeper the wrong way from the resulting spot kick as Cowes went in a t half time a goal to the good.
The Islanders stepped up a gear at the start of the second half and doubled their lead when DARREN WILLIAMS pounced on a defensive mistake, the left back playing a square ball straight to him, before rounding the keeper and slotting the ball into the empty net on 52 mins. Just three minutes later skipper GARETH BRICKNELL was played in on goal before tucking the ball past the keeper and into the right corner of the Stoneham net for number three.
Fifteen minutes from time Aidan Bryan beat the visitors offside trap to break down the Cowes right, he squared the ball to GARETH BRICKNELL who beat the keeper with ease for a fourth Cowes goal.
A fifth goal was added 5 minutes from the end when Jason Ince won the ball in midfield, split the visiting defence with a superb ball which GARETH BRICKNELL ran onto, beating the keeper and rolling the ball into the empty goal to complete his hat trick and the scoring.
Unfortunately the game was marred in the final minute when Stoneham’s number 4, having already been booked, took out Gareth Bricknell on the touchline in front of the stand, resulting in a second yellow followed by a red card. The visiting skipper then reacted with a verbal volley towards the Referee which earned him a straight red. Having finally left the pitch he continued his use of foul language towards the Officials. Not the way you would expect a skipper to act.

IOWDFA Saturday League Div. 1 Match Report (4th April 2011): Cowes Res vs Newchurch FC

The reserves played Newchurch in this IOWDFA Div 1 game. This game was the start of a busy seven days for the reserves, with a possible four games to be played (dependant on the result of the Memorial Cup game being played 07/04/11).  The lads started the game in a positive fashion, they created several good chances inside the first 20 minutes, the Newchurch ‘keeper was kept on his toes when after 10 minutes when some smart play from Jacob Stimson down the left created an opportunity for Jamie dyer when the ball was slid inside the box for Jamie who turned and shot just wide.  The pressure continued from Cowes with Shane silk going close from 15 yds out, but his shot went just wide of the right hand angle of post and bar.  With 30 mins on the clock, Cowes thought they had a deserved lead when a shot from Stephen Perfect was spilled by the Newchurch ‘Keeper and the follow up by Jamie Dyer was put away, only for the Linesman’s flag to rule Jamie offside.  10 mins later Cowes did go in front, some neat play between Liam Slavin and Jacob Stimson down the left, enabled a low cross into Jamie Dyer, who turned and coolly laid the ball to Shane Silk who slotted the ball into the (‘keepers) bottom right corner of the net, 1 – 0 Cowes.

The second half started with Newchurch the more determined, putting Cowes on the back foot for most of the first 15 mins of the second half, playing the long ball game and turning the Cowes defence on every occasion possible, although under a lot of pressure there was not really any shots to test Kurt Butt, who had stood in as Goalkeeper at the last minute for the injured Jordan Brownrigg.  Cowes soon got to grips with the long ball tactics and starting playing some great football and creating some decent chances, the most stand out of the chances went to Max Draper, who was put through by some good work down the right hand side by Dan Verstraeten, Max was through on goal with a Newchurch defender putting pressure on him, only for max to shoot narrowly wide from 12yds. This gave Cowes a bit more confidence going forward and with around 20mins to go, the ball was played to Jacob Stimson from Left back Liam Slavin, Jacob carried the ball down the left flank and beat his man with a nice flick over the players head, he then kept his head to pass the ball to Stephen Perfect who dummied, then onto Jamie Dyer who also dummied the ball about 20yds out for Shane Silk to run on to and smash the ball right footed into the (‘Keepers) right hand top corner, for one of the best goals this season! 2 – 0 Cowes.

The remainder of the second half was very equal with Newchurch hitting the bar in the last 10 mins, and also Jamie Dyer going through one on one with the Newchurch ‘Keeper, Jamie hit his shot low across the ‘keeper only to see his shot saved smartly.

Final Score Cowes Reserves 2 – 0 Newchurch FC. Well done lads, a good win with some great football being played

Cowes Res Line Up:  Kurt Butt, Dan Verstraeten, Jake Taylor, Andy Watson, Liam Slavin, Stephen Perfect, Shane Silk, Max Draper, Owen Woodburn, Jamie Dyer, Jacob Stimson.  Subs: Joe Collins, Calum Taylor, Jimmy Wykes.

Match Report: IOWDFA Saturday League, Div 1 (30th March 2011) – Cowes Sports Reserves v Ventnor FC

The Reserves played Ventnor FC in this Division 1 game, on a misty night at Westwood Park.  The reserves didn’t start well and had to battle with a determined Ventnor side for the majority of the first 45 mins, they hardly created any chances in front of goal and were reduced to long-range efforts, which rarely tested the Ventnor keeper.  The only goal bound effort came with 5 minutes left of the 1st half when Kurt Butt met a deep cross at the back post only to see his effort come back of the left hand upright, and failed to convert the rebound due to some last ditch defending from Ventnor.

The second half started more promisingly for Cowes, as the lads seemed to settle down and start passing the ball in the way, which we have been accustomed to seeing this season.  The chances started to appear as Cowes put pressure on the Ventnor goal and within 10 minutes of the restart their efforts were rewarded when Kurt Butt beat his man on the left wing and put a hard low cross into the box which the Ventnor Defender could only turn into his own net with Owen Woodburn waiting to pounce, 1-0 Cowes.  Cowes were starting to dominate the possession throughout the second half, and looked the more likely to score when Max Draper started a run down the right side beating one man with a neat flick over the players head just inside the Ventnor penalty area, and then stepping inside another player who had made a lunge at the ball and missed but made contact with Max who went down, the referee had no hesitation in pointing to the penalty spot, one of his rare good decisions in the game!  Stephen Perfect stepped up to take the penalty and fired high into the (keepers) right corner of the net, giving the Ventnor keeper no chance, 2-0 Cowes.  The remainder of the second half was very even with chances at both ends, especially late on when Ventnor hit the post from just outside the penalty area, luckily the re-bound fell to the Cowes defence who cleared the danger.

Final Score Cowes Reserves 2 – 0 Ventnor FC

Well done lads, after a poor start against a tough tackling side, the right side won the game.

Match Report: IOWDFA Saturday League, Div 1 (5 March 2011) – Cowes Sports Reserves v Oakfield

Cowes Reserves 2 – 0 Oakfield

The Reserves faced a resurgent Oakfield side who had won 5 from their previous 6 games before today’s game.

The lads started the game well creating several good opportunities to score but without applying the finishing touch.  Oakfield were limited to only one real goal chance in the first half which was blocked by Joe Winchcombe in goal when the ball bounced just in front of him which he managed to deflect away from danger.  The midfield was being run by Stephen Perfect, Max Draper and Shane Silk and the only way Oakfield were managing to upset them was to put some hard tackles in, with one of them on Max Draper deemed too hard by the referee and Oakfield Player Nathan Bett receiving a yellow card.

The second half started along the same line as the first with Cowes doing most of the pressing, the pressure paid off within ten minutes of the re-start as Liam Slavin went on a mazy run from just inside his own half to beat three Oakfield players, eventually getting into the penalty area and the last defender gave Liam a push in the back enough to force him to lose his balance and his footing and the referee didn’t hesitate in awarding a penalty kick.  The spot kick was duly dispatched past the goalkeeper into the (keeper’s) bottom right corner by Shane Silk to make it 1-0 to Cowes.  The goal acted as a stirring point for Oakfield who then put Cowes under some pressure for 15 minutes after the penalty.  They only ever looked like scoring on two occasions when a cross fell to Oakfield’s John Taylor who headed wide, and also from a free kick on the edge of the Cowes box which was blazed over the bar by the Oakfield player, but the Cowes defence held firm.
The challenges were still flying in from Oakfield and a lunge on Max Draper from Nathan Bett again produced Bett’s second yellow and a Red card immediately followed from the ref.  Cowes made two substitutions Callum Taylor replaced Kurt Butt and Craig Insley replaced Jimmy Wykes, Craig went into centre of defence with Charlie Allen moving to right back and Callum was a like for like switch for Kurt Butt on the left side.
The substitution was inspired as after 10 minutes of Callum arriving on the field he was put through on goal one on one with the keeper, which he calmly slotted low into the (keepers) left corner of the net to make it 2-0.  The second goal seemed to knock the stuffing out of Oakfield and Cowes took total control of the game, playing some great football throughout the side, enabling the lads to create a few more opportunities late on.

Well done lads a good win against a tough opposition with some fantastic football played at times.

Team: Joe Winchcombe, Jimmy Wykes, Charlie Allen, Andrew Watson, Liam Slavin, Stephen Perfect, Max Draper, Shane Silk, Jamie Dyer, Owen Woodburn, Kurt Butt.  Subs: Callum Taylor, Craig Insley, Joe Collins.

Match Report: IOWDFA Saturday League, Div 1 (26 February 2011) – Carisbrooke Utd v Cowes Sports Reserves

Carisbrooke Utd 2 v 4 Cowes Sports Reserves

The reserves were away at Carisbrooke Utd on Saturday, the lads started well with some good pressure on the Carisbrooke goal but the failure to produce the final pass meant that things were level until Steven Perfect latched on to a Jamie Dyer through ball on the right hand side of the penalty box and shot across the Carisbrooke keeper and into the top left corner of the net.   That goal seemed to rally Carisbrooke, and Cowes found themselves under some pressure from the home side. That is, until a break down the right side from Jimmy Wykes who played the ball down the line for Dan Verstraeten who crossed into the box causing panic in the Carisbrooke defence.   The ball eventually found Owen Woodburn on his own who had the easy task of side footing past a helpless keeper.

The second half started with Carisbrooke putting pressure on the Cowes goal, and that pressure told when Carisbrooke scored within 10 mins of the restart. Cowes rallied and restored their two goal lead when Owen Woodburn was put through on goal from a well worked move involving 3 players. Owen raced clear to round the goalkeeper and coolly slotted home his second of the game and Cowes’ third.

After an period of midfield battles things got better for Cowes when a neat one-two between Jamie Dyer and Shane Silk on the edge of the Carisbrooke penalty area sent Jamie into the box, and then went on to beat the last man and fired his shot high into the Carisbrooke net to make it 4 – 1. Carisbrooke did get a late goal when Cowes failed to clear and the centre forward poked home from a few yards out. The game ended Carisbrooke United 2-4 Cowes Sports.

Well done lads, good win on a difficult pitch.

Team:  Joe Winchcombe, Jimmy Wykes, Charlie Allen, Andy Watson, Liam Slavin, Stephen Perfect, Shane Silk, Jamie Dyer, Dan Verstraeten, Owen Woodburn, Kurt Butt.  Sub:  Callum Taylor

Match Report: Cowes Sports 1st Team v Cowes Sports Reserves (14 December 2010)

1ST XI 4 V 2 RESERVES

Due to their recent inactivity, Manager Steve Taylor arranged for the 1st Team to play the Reserves in a practice match at Westwood Park and it proved to be a very useful exercise for both teams.

After a cagey start by both sides it was the Ressies (playing in Blue & White striped shirts) who settled the quicker and only a last ditch tackle by Sam Yelland prevented Callum Taylor from testing Chris Norris. The 1st team (playing in the Red away kit) hit back as Gareth Bricknell saw his effort blocked by young Jordan Brownrigg.  Again, Callum Taylor, was causing problems and his deflected shot flew into the safe hands of Chris Norris.

The 1st Team were at times looking rather edgy and arguing between themselves which the Reserves should have taken advantage of. Some excellent flowing football ended with another effort from Callum Taylor into the chest of Chris Norris, who was throughout the first half the much busier of the two keepers.

Gareth Bricknell then shot straight at Jordan Brownrigg having been set up by Mikey Jones before a defence splitting ball from Jimmy Wykes released Owen Woodburn whose dangerous cross was well cut out by Sam Yelland. The resulting corner, Liam Slaven volleyed wide of the back post. Gavin Bodrell crossed but Jamie Dyer directed his header wide of goal.

Against the run of play, Steve Taylor’s first team took the lead on the half hour mark when Gavin Bodrell played in Jamie Dyer who calmly rounded Jordan Brownrigg before crossing to Mikey JONES who controlled the ball before smashing it into the net.

A break of 10 minutes was then taken for both sides to “talk tactics”. Upon resuming the game the Reserves carried on playing some neat and tidy football with Steve Perfect and Max Draper running the game. Owen Woodburn tested Chris Norris, then Callum Taylor once again tried his luck but his chip was safely gathered by Nozzer. Both Sam Yelland and Lee Davies then missed a through ball letting Owen Woodburn in who passed to Callum Taylor but his curling effort flew wide of the goal.

Ashley Brett then saw his header superbly blocked on the line by Jordan Brownrigg’s feet before being cleared and Craig Thomas shot at the young keeper when better options were on.

The half time whistle went with the 1st team lucky to be leading, the Reserves by far the better team to that point.

The 1st XI came out for the second half no doubt with Steve’s words still ringing in their ears as they started much the better side. Darren Williams’ shot saw Reserves sub keeper Joe Winchcombe save well. However the Ressies should have equalised when a cross from the right found Roly Bryan six yards out, but he headed wide. Shortly after Jamie DYER intercepted a pass from Charlie Panayi 25 yards out, he took the ball on before slotting the ball past Joe Winchcombe and into the net to double the lead.

Joe Winchcombe then produced an oustanding save to push Gareth Bricknell’s shot over for a corner as the 1st team threatened to add to their two goal lead. Ashley BRETT did add a third when he met Jamie Dyer’s corner with a powerful header from 5 yards. Roly Bryan went close to beating Jordan Brownrigg, who had replaced Chris Norris in goal for the firsts, Nozzer returning to the field of play up front. Another Dyer corner this time deep beyond the back post was headed goalwards by Chris Norris only for Joe Winchcombe to gather with ease.

Finally the Reserves got the goal their play richly deserved when Liam Slaven crossed from in front of the stands and Jamie GULLIVER’S flicked header found the left corner of the goal. The joy was short lived as a ball into the Reserves area saw joe Winchcombe twice deny Chris Norris a goal but he could do nothing to stop Craig THOMAS from adding a fourth.

The last laugh went to the Reserves as Callum Taylor’s cross was swept in by Owen WOODBURN, despite Jordan Brownrigg efforts to keep it out.

So it was as it should be with the 1st XI beating the 2nd XI, but it was certainly not an easy victory and if the Reserve team lads can play like they did every Saturday, prehaps adding the final touch they will certainly win more than they lose and should finish quite well up in the Island Div 1.

TEAMS:- 1ST XI – C. Norris, M. Herbert, L. Davies, S. Yelland, C. Holmes, A. Brett, G. Bricknell, M. Jones, C. Thomas, D. Williams, J. Dyer, Subs; T. Dye, G. Bodrell, J. Brownrigg.

Match Report: Hampshire Intermediate Cup Round 1 (11 September 2010) Cowes Sports Reserves v BTC (Southampton)

Cowes Sports Reserves 2 v BTC (Southampton) 1

The Reserves shrugged off their League woes with an impressive performance to progress into the next round of the Hampshire Intermediate Cup last Saturday and in the process found someone we’ve been looking for some time now – a natural goal-scorer.

The tough tackling Southampton side were second best during the first half, but it ended in stalemate, with neither side able to get the upper hand.

After sixty minutes, Mark Randall brought on Gavin Bodrell up front. Gavin is really a rugby player, but wants to try his hand with the round ball and what an impact he made on his debut. Within a few minutes he beat his man on the edge of the box and curled his shot wide of the keeper to put us in front.

Unfortunately the lead lasted about a minute as Roly Bryan upended a BTC forward inside the box and the equaliser came from the penalty spot. The visitors now looked the more likely winners, but after Jimmy Wykes and Robin Jones had goal-bound shots tipped around the frame of the goal, Bodrell stole the show again with just five minutes left, he picked up the ball on the edge of the box and fired his shot hard and low just inside the near post for the winner.

Mark Randall might struggle to hold on to Gavin if he continues to show that sort of form.
