1st TEAM WIN WHILST RESERVES DRAW IN FRIENDLIES v AFC STONEHAM

PRE – SEASON Friendly Saturday July 28th
COWES SPORTS RESERVES 1 – 1 AFC STONEHAM RESERVES
Cowes Sports Reserves earned a creditable draw against a good young Stoneham sideas substitute OWEN WOODBURN netted towards the latter stages of the second half having fallen behind early in the first from a corner.
COWES SPORTS 5 – 0 AFC STONEHAM
Cowes Sports 1st XI ran out comfortable winners in their latest pre-season game against Hampshire Premier side AFC Stoneham.
Both teams were intent on playing the ball on the deck throughout the game which was good to watch. The Yachtsmen finally broke the deadlock five minutes before the interval when DARREN WILLIAMS was tripped by the visiting keeper as he tried to round him, he got up to send the keeper the wrong way from the resulting spot kick as Cowes went in a t half time a goal to the good.
The Islanders stepped up a gear at the start of the second half and doubled their lead when DARREN WILLIAMS pounced on a defensive mistake, the left back playing a square ball straight to him, before rounding the keeper and slotting the ball into the empty net on 52 mins. Just three minutes later skipper GARETH BRICKNELL was played in on goal before tucking the ball past the keeper and into the right corner of the Stoneham net for number three.
Fifteen minutes from time Aidan Bryan beat the visitors offside trap to break down the Cowes right, he squared the ball to GARETH BRICKNELL who beat the keeper with ease for a fourth Cowes goal.
A fifth goal was added 5 minutes from the end when Jason Ince won the ball in midfield, split the visiting defence with a superb ball which GARETH BRICKNELL ran onto, beating the keeper and rolling the ball into the empty goal to complete his hat trick and the scoring.
Unfortunately the game was marred in the final minute when Stoneham’s number 4, having already been booked, took out Gareth Bricknell on the touchline in front of the stand, resulting in a second yellow followed by a red card. The visiting skipper then reacted with a verbal volley towards the Referee which earned him a straight red. Having finally left the pitch he continued his use of foul language towards the Officials. Not the way you would expect a skipper to act.

PENALTY SHOOT OUT DECIDES SECOND SEMI FINAL IN WESTWOOD CUP

NEWPORT IOW 1 – 1 EAST COWES VICS

East Cowes Vics won 4-3 on penalties

Newport and East Cowes Vics clashed in the 2nd semi final of the Westwood Cup at Cowes in what turned out to be a very tense encounter.
The first half saw possession shared but very few goalmouth incidents, the best opening of the half fell to Vics when a cross from the right found Freddie Knowles unmarked, but he could only direct his header wide of Cameron Farley’s right hand post.
On a lush Westwood Park pitch Vics upped their game in the second half and were rewarded in the 62nd minute when JAKE YOUNIE volleyed home from close range to stun Newport. The Wessex Premier side however responded well and leveled the scores in the 71st minute through TOM McINNES and with neither side able to find a winning goal the game had to be decided with a penalty shoot-out.  Alex Prezpolewski, Corbin Ricketts and skipper Harry Ovnik scored with their spot kicks whilst John McKie blasted his kick out of the ground before Ryan Oatley sent his wide. Although Adam Sunsberg sent his kick wide of the goal Vics triumphed as Wayne Newnham, Andy Ebbs, Aiden Sainsbury and Josh Younie found the target to send them into the Final against hosts Cowes Sports whilst Newport will face Brading in the 3rd/4th play-off.

BURBIDGE DOUBLE SEES HOSTS INTO WESTWOOD CUP FINAL

Westwood Cup 1st Semi Final Friday 19th July 2012

COWES SPORTS 2 – 0 BRADING TOWN
Cowes Sports progressed to Sunday’s Final with a hard fought victory over a spirited Brading Town side in the 1st Semi Final of the Westwood Cup on Friday evening.
The home side began quite well but as the first half progressed hard working Brading came into the match and started causing the Cowes defence a few problems. Dan Vale shot wide from distance when maybe he could have closed in on goal before shooting before at the other end a Tom Dye free kick from 25 yards rattled the Brading crossbar before the ball eventually found its way back to Tom whose effort flew just over the bar.
Cowes looked brighter in the second half and in the 54th minute were awarded a penalty as Town keeper Lewis Murray tripped Dom Burbidge in the area, although a foul may have been committed in the build up. DOM BURBIDGE tucked the spot kick inside the keeper’s right hand post to give the hosts the lead.
Burbidge nearly got a second when a free kick from wide on the Cowes left dipped late and again Brading were saved by the crossbar. Cowes Sports keeper then saved acrobatically to deny an equaliser before the result was settled late on when Robbie Taylor’s deep cross was headed back across goal for DOM BURBIDGE to scramble home a second goal for the Yachtsmen.

Wessex League (Div 1) Cowes Sports v Amesbury Town – Saturday 20 August 2011

Cowes Sports 2 Amesbury Town 0

A goal in each half gave the Yachtsmen a comfortable win in their first game of the new season.
With half a dozen regulars unavailable, new signing, Leighton Speechley-Price, a mainland based player who impressed for the Under 18s last season, was on the bench.
Early chances fell to Kieron Foster and Jamie Dyer, but their efforts were saved and blocked respectively.
After thirty minutes Cowes took a deserved lead, when Jamie Dyer’s cross from the right eluded Dom Burbidge, but ran on to Darren Williams, who buried it from ten yards out.
Further opportunities fell to Ashley Brett and Darren Williams as Cowes continued to dominate, but the visitors had the best chance with half-time approaching, their forward screwing the ball wide of the post when it looked easier to score.
After the break Cowes lost midfielder Kurt Butt with a nasty looking knee injury and he was replaced by Leighton Speechley-Price and the youngster almost made an instant impact, but his delicate chip just failed to clear the visitors’ keeper.
Max Draper and Darren Williams both went close as the home side created more chances, but with ten minutes left Leighton Speechley-Price was put through again and this time he successfully chipped the advancing keeper to double the lead.
The Supporters’ Cost Cutter at Pan Stores Man of the Match was Max Draper.
Cowes Sports: C. Norris, J. Ince, L. Davies, A. Brett (Capt), M. Herbert, M. Draper, K. Foster, D. Burbidge, D. Williams, J. Dyer, K. Butt.
