Egham Town 0 v Cowes Sports 1

The Yachtsmen made the long trip to Surrey in confident mood looking to add their hosts, Egham Town, to the growing list of Vase victims in this season’s competition. However they knew that it would be a difficult task to come away with a victory as Egham were currently top of The Combined Counties Football League Premier Division, having won 12 and drawn 1 of their previous 13 game, scoring 49 and conceding 17.

Craig Insley returned to centre midfield in place of cup-tied Josh Appell, the only change made from the previous match, the ‘Sarnies’ being at full strength.

The Surrey side started well but found the Yachtsmen’s defence hard to break down and as expected chances came, the best of which fell to centre half Aarron Taylor-Ives who headed over the bar.

Cowes managed to carve out a good opportunity for themselves, but after Dom Burbidge sped down the right wing, Tom Dye’s cross was headed past the post from six yards out by Jimmy Wykes and and the first half ended goalless.

Five minutes into the second half left back Lee Davies was replaced by Mitch Herbert as Egham pressed hard. They thought they had the lead when Captain Marcus Moody converted a cross from the right, but an offside flag had been raised before the cross had been delivered. With some strong, but fair tackles being put in by both sides Referee Kevin Norris from Kidlington was controlling the game very well and when, in the sixty-fifth minute, he awarded Cowes a free-kick, mid-way in the home half and only a few yards in from the touchline. Skipper Gareth BRICKNELL floated the ball into the Egham area towards the back post and though it should have been dealt with by Paul Borg in the home goal, the ball ended up in the back of the ‘Sarnies’ net for what proved to be the only goal of a very tight game.

From that point onwards Cowes soaked up a lot of pressure but keeper Chris Norris had very little to save as the back four in front of him were outstanding in dealing with everything that was thrown at them. In particular, Aidan Bryan was at his very best, breaking down the home side’s attacks on numerous occasions.

On the break, Jimmy Wykes could have had a second but shot just wide after cutting in from the right wing and the closest Egham came to an equaliser was in the final few minutes when substitute Brendan Matthews headed over from inside the six yard box as Cowes held on to progress into the 3rd Round on December 3rd, amid much celebration from the large contingent of travelling fans, who had out-shouted the home supporters throughout the match.

Cowes Sports: C. Norris, M. Draper, L. Davies, A. Brett, A. Bryan, T. Dye, C. Insley, J. Wykes, G. Bricknell, D. Williams, D. Burbidge.

Substitutes: M. Herbert, K. Foster, M. Jones, D. Thurman

VERWOOD TOWN 2 – 2 COWES SPORTS

The Yachtsmen travelled to Verwood looking to return to winning ways in the League after last weeks surprise defeat at Amesbury, although a fantastic League Cup victory at Totton & Eling in mid-week had restored the confidence.

Our hosts were sitting pretty in third place in the league table having won their previous EIGHT league games and having lost just three cup matches in twelve.
A debut was given to Josh Appell, a recent aquisition from Brading Town, in place of the injured Craig Insley, whilst Todd Weedon replaced Mitch Herbert on the bench, the only changes from mid week.

The home side started very brightly, Luke Homer volleying a couple of feet wide in the 5th minute. Cowes responded with Josh Appell shooting wide before Lee Davies’ free kick was met by Ashley Brett, but his header was straight at the keeper. A long throw into the area was flicked on by Gareth Bricknell but unfortunately both Darren Williams and Dom Burbidge could not quite get a touch to direct the ball into the net. Ashley Brett then lost the ball some 30 yards out but Charlie Gajic shot past keeper Chris Norris but also managed to beat the post as well to save Ashley’s blushes. This all happened in the first quarter of an hour, the next quarter was very quiet with neither side threatening the opposition’s goal.

Just past the half hour mark Lee Davies appeared to be fouled by Verwoods top scorer Mike Haskell, as Lee fell to the ground Haskell went down as well, just inside the box, Referee Andrew Laishley awarded a penalty to Verwood and issued a yellow card to Lee. JOHN WEBB stepped up to send Chris Norris the wrong way and give the home side the lead. Spurred on by their good fortune Verwood put pressure on the Cowes defence and, in the 36th minute, a second goal was added when a cross from the right was blasted back across the goal into the right corner of the net by CRAIG BARNETT, sending the bench wild with delight. No further goals were added in the first half.

The Islanders came out for the second half with their ears still ringing from a half time rollocking. A change to the formation saw Dom Burbidge up front with Darren Williams to a 4-4-2 rather than the 4-5-1 played in the first half. The change seemed to work as with more space in central midfield Josh Appell and Tom Dye began to be more influential in Cowes’ play. Josh Appell saw his shot go wide of target before Tom Dye burst through from midfield, releasing Dom Burbidge but Dom’s shot was blocked by home keeper Chris Lynch. However from the block, Tom Dye picked up the loose ball and forced his way into the box where he went down under challenge by a defender and Referee Laishley awarded a second “soft” penalty. Top scorer, Dom BURBIDGE, making no mistake from the spot to bring the Yachsmen back into the match and cause a few hearts to flutter amongst the home crowd.

Buoyed by getting back into the game Cowes dominated and in the 61st minute Tom Dye played the ball to Dom Burbidge who flicked into the path of Darren WILLIAMS with the home defenders claiming ‘offside’. Darren kept his nerve to slot the ball under Chris Lynch and into the middle of the unguarded net, levelling the scores. Both sides went in search of a third goal, Josh Appell’s shot fizzing across the area but wide of goal, Cowes then had to thank Chris Norris as he just managed to get a hand to a cross shot and push it away from a Verwood striker who was set to score. The Islanders were then caught on the break this time though it was the right hand post that denied substitute Jack Slatterley from scoring. Cowes responded when Darren Williams saw his lob from distance clear the crossbar and the final chance of the match went to Dom Burbidge whose header was straight at the keeper.

So a well contested match in which both teams dominated one half ended in a 2-2 draw and a point apiece.

TEAM:- Chris Norris, Max Draper, Lee Davies, Ashley Brett, Aidan Bryan, Josh Appell, Tom Dye, Dom Burbidge, Darren Williams, Jimmy Wykes, Gareth Bricknell capt, Subs; Mickey Jones(Gareth Bricknell), Patrick Wilson, Todd Weedon + Dave Thurman all not used.

Premier Division Totton & Eling were given the chance of gaining revenge on Division One side Cowes Sports in this Wessex League Cup tie, who had dumped them out of the FA Vase back in September. With Manager Steve Taylor unavailable, Ian Potts and Richie Woodburn took charge of the side. The home side made six changes from the side that had earned a credible draw against Bournemouth three days earlier whilst the Islanders made two changes, Chris Norris returning in goal and Jimmy Wykes replacing Michael Jones in the starting line up, from the side that surprisingly lost at Amesbury Town.

It was the home side who came close to opening the scoring in the second minute when a ball from defence saw Max Draper mis-time his jump and the ball bounce over him to leave the home side with a three on one situation. Striker Callum Oliver rounded Chris Norris before rolling the ball goalwards only to see Lee Davies make up ground to clear from the near post at the expense of a corner. The Premier side looked as though they were up for the game as they dominated the early stages, but gradually the ‘Yachtsmen’ began to find their feet and on 20 minutes, a superbly executed effort from 25 yards by Tom DYE found the top right corner of the ‘Millers’ goal. This was much to the delight the travelling fans, with the exception of Dave Draper who at the time was in the toilet, yet again missing a Cowes goal.

The Islanders gained confidence from taking the lead and nearly doubled their advantage on the half hour when a excellent build up down the left finished with Jimmy Wykes firing in a shot that only just cleared the bar. Chris Norris was largely a spectator during the first half as Cowes went in at the break one up and looking to complete a Cup double over their hosts.
Cowes continued to boss the match at the start of the second half, much to the frustration of the home crowd and in particular the players, referee Paul Byfield having to speak to players on several occasions. Dom Burbidge’s persistance in closing down his marker led him to winning the ball near Totton’s left corner flag, he scampered into the area before teeing up Darren Williams who unfortunately blasted well over the bar from six yards when a second goal looked certain. Just past the hour mark and Darren Williams again fluffed his lines following good work down the Cowes left, this time hitting the side netting, some thought he had scored.

Continuing to hit their hosts on the break the Yachtsmen finally increased their lead in the 65th minute when Craig Insley threaded a ball through to Dom Burbidge whose slightly heavy touch ran into the path of Darren WILLIAMS. He, on seeing Alisdare Pugi slightly off his goalline, produced an exquisite chip from the edge of the box into the left corner of the goal. Further goals for the visitors looked likely, T&E keeper Alisdare Pugi just beating Dom Burbidge to a Tom Dye through ball before Gareth Bricknell’s cross from the left saw Craig Insley head against the crossbar. Number three finally came in the 74th minute as Darren Williams released Dom BURBIDGE who thumped the ball home from just inside the box to surely put the match to bed. Skipper Gareth Bricknell’s quick free kick from the right nearly added a fourth, but the home keeper managed to save the ball under his bar. Darren Williams then sent a free header wide of target when it looked easier to score.
Almost from nowhere T&E dragged themselves back into the match when a 80th minute corner from the Cowes right was headed into the net from close range at the near post by Jamie FEASEY. A minute later Cowes keeper Chris Norris spilled the ball but Max Draper cleared the danger. Then an 82nd minute corner, this time from the left to the back post was headed back across the goal where substitute and former Southampton player Jo TESSEM headed home to set up a tense final few minutes for all. With time running out home captain Phil Ward had a great chance to level things up but he could only head over the bar and finally, with much relief from all connected to Cowes Referee Paul Byfield blew the final whistle as Tooton & Eling once again bowed out of a cup competition on their own patch to Cowes Sports.

Amesbury Town 2 Cowes Sports 1

Cowes dominated the first half at Amesbury on Saturday, but with only a single goal to show for their efforts, they fell away after the break to surrender the points.
Lee Davies, Dom Burbidge and Craig Insley all had early chances as the home side struggled to keep the visitors out and their desperation showed when Mikey Jones was clattered in midfield, though the perpetrator escaped punishment.
Amesbury held out until the twentieth minute, when Lee Davies’ free-kick was headed home by Ashley Brett to give Cowes a deserved lead.
Dom Burbidge then went round the keeper, but his goal-bound shot was cleared off the line by a defender and Darren Williams almost netted, but could only find the side-netting at the far post.
On eighty-two minutes the referee threw Amesbury a life-line when Max Draper was harshly judged to have impeded an opposing striker as he leapt to get in a header and Dave Thurman, standing in for the injured Chris Norris, was well beaten by the resulting penalty.
With just three minutes left a scramble in the Cowes penalty area ended with Dave Thurman being beaten again by a looping header which dropped in under the bar.
The Yachtsmen almost snatched a late equaliser, but Darren Williams’ shot was deflected wide by a defender and the final whistle brought an end the their winning run.
Cowes Sports: D. Thurman, M. Draper, L. Davies, A. Brett, a. Bryan, C. Insley, T. Dye, G. Bricknell, M. Jones, D. Williams, D. Burbidge.
Substitutes: P. Wilson, J. Wykes, K. Foster.

Both sides have recently shown excellent form, Cowes with four wins on the bounce, whilst visitors Gillingham Town from The Toolstation Western League Div 1 unbeaten in their previous seven fixtures (5 wins, 2 draws), an intriguing match was in prospect at Westwood Park. Cowes had a full squad to choose from whilst their opponents fielded the same eleven as their previous match.

The first half was a very even contest, Cowes making the early running but Gillingham looking dangerous on the break. Mid way through the half the Dorset side thought they had taken the lead when Aidan Bryan, trying to shepherd the ball back to keeper Chris Norris, was intercepted by Taoufilk Ben Salem who managed to challenge the home keeper. The ricochet ending up in the Cowes goal, but a flag had been raised by the Assistant for a foul on Chris Norris. In truth, it seemed a bit harsh on the Western League side. Ben Salem was not pleased with the decision and managed to talk his way into Referee Nigel Baker’s notebook. Mr Baker then had to speak to the visitors Player/Manager Adrian Foster during which Ben Salem appeared to make a gesture towards the home crowd which was right in front of the Assistant earning him a second caution followed by a red card. As he left the pitch the ‘Gills’ player jumped over the pitchside barrier and tried to get into the stands only to be restrained by a travelling supporter before being led away to the changing rooms.

Despite having a man advantage the Islanders found it hard to find a way through a stubborn defence whilst top goalscorer Lee Gale was causing problems for the home defenders. It remained goalless at the break.

Manager Steve Taylor was forced into a half time substitution after Mikey Jones, who picked up an injury just before the interval, had to be replaced by Cowes’ top scorer Dom Burbidge. The Yachtsmen got the breakthrough they were looking for in the 51st minute when Darren Williams laid the ball back to Max Draper who split the visitors defence. Craig INSLEY then took it up before rolling the ball past Jonathan Hill and into the net. Bouyed by this, Cowes went for the jugular and within 5 mins they had doubled their advantage when a ball into the box was well won by Jimmy Wykes who played it back to Darren Williams. His shot was touched in by Craig INSLEY for his and Cowes’ second, much to the delight of most of the 115 crowd.

With nothing to lose now Gillingham began to throw everything at the Cowes defence and Chris Norris was at his best to push a goalbound effort away for a corner with fifteen minutes to go. The final nail in the Dorset sides coffin was hammered in four minutes from time when Lee Davies’ free kick from just inside the Gillingham half saw Darren WILLIAMS beat his marker to touch the ball home from eight yards and completed another successful Vase outing. Cowes now wait, with anticipation as to who they take on in the second round proper of the FA Carlsberg Vase.

Cowes Sports made the long trip to Warminster Town looking to continue their recent winning form.
With youngster Charlie Allen (hamstring) and John Chambers (back) both missing from the squad that won at Hythe & Dibden midweek, the Yachtsmen welcomed back both Craig Insley and Aidan Bryan following illness and injury respectively.
Cowes made the better start with Michael Jones chipping just over the bar early on before taking a deserved lead. Colin Hubbard, the referee, waved play-on after Max Draper had been up-ended near the touch line deep into the Warminster half. The ball was crossed into the area where Dom BURBIDGE, challenged by Scott Lewis (home keeper), managed to get his head to the ball and send it into the left corner of the home goal giving Cowes a 10th minute lead.
Warminster’s hopes of finding a way back into the game were dealt a double blow within the next 15 minutes as brothers Jason Guy (concussion) and top scorer Matt Guy (leg) were both forced off being replaced by Craig Sheppard and Dave Watkins respectively.
Another flowing move involving Craig Insley, Lee Davies and Darren Williams nearly ended with Williams increasing the lead but his chip just cleared the crossbar. Pressure eventually paid off as Michael Jones jinked his way into the area before being tripped by defender Lee Davidson earning himself a yellow card and giving Dom BURBIDGE the opportunity to double the Islanders lead which he took with ease. A third goal was nearly added in first half injury time when Kieran Foster’s goalbound effort was deflected wide and from the resulting corner Dom Burbidge’s header was cleared off the goalline before Darren Williams sent the ball wide of the goal.
Warminster looked a different side at the start of the second half and Lee Davies was called upon to clear the ball off his goal line within a minute of the restart.
However despite plenty of possession the home side rarely threatened Chris Norris in the visitors goal. Although Cowes were not quite as effective throughout the second half the one chance they had was taken in the 75th minute when a long ball out of defence saw their keeper come out of his area. Under challenge from Darren WILLIAMS he missed the ball and the latter passed the ball into the net for the third goal. Late on, both Craig Insley and a home defender were yellow carded after they clashed from which the defender had to leave the field injured. Cowes held on comfortably to record their fourth straight victory without conceding a goal.

The Yachtsmen completed an impressive double over the sailors after knocking them out of the FA Vase a fortnight before.
Before the kick-off Tom Dye was presented with the September Player of the month award sponsored by Prospect Financial Planning Services.
It took twenty-five minutes for the first incident of note as the visitors fired a shot narrowly wide of the far post.
Ashley Brett headed a Tom Dye corner just wide and then, when the mid-fielder’s shot was parried by the Services’ keeper, Darren Williams’ clinical finish from the rebound, was controversially ruled out by the linesman’s flag.
Just before the break Craig Insley’s shot was also knocked out by the keeper, but this time no-one was on hand to take advantage.
On the hour Cowes broke the deadlock when Tom Dye’s cross was spectacularly volleyed home at the far post by skipper Gareth Bricknell.
After seventy-eight minutes Cowes made the game safe with a second goal as young Jimmy Wykes strode through the visitors’ defence and fired accurately past the advancing keeper into the far corner of the net.
There was still time for Craig Insley to get in a vital block after Lee Davies miscued a clearance and for substitute Kieron Foster to be immediately booked before shooting narrowly over the bar.
Tom Dye was voted the ‘Costcutter @ Pan Stores’ Man of the Match by the Cowes supporters.
Cowes Sports: C. Norris, M. Draper, A. Brett, C. Allen, L. Davies, C. Insley, J. Wykes, T. Dye, D. Williams, M. Jones, G. Bricknell.
Substitutes: D. Burbidge, K. Foster, L. Speechley-Price, D. Thurman.

This was a lacklustre performance by the Yachtsmen in a game that they really should have won. The visitors took advantage of some poor marking to snatch the only goal on the hour mark.
Both sides traded long shots during the early exchanges and then Cowes skipper, Ashley Brett received a caution for an offence on the edge of the penalty area

A few minutes later Brett received another warning from the Referee and this was enough to prompt Steve Taylor to withdraw his captain to avoid his side going down to ten men.

As the half drew to a close, Jimmy Wykes twice went close to opening the scoring, first just failing to make contact with a Tom Dye cross and then, when the midfielder supplied another opportunity, the youngster’s flicked volley went straight at the Fleet goalkeeper.

After the break Leighton Speechley-Price had three early chances, but was unable to convert and the visitors gave a warning of things to come when they struck the post.

After sixty-one minutes, as the home players disputed a throw-in decision in front of the stand, Fleet swept the ball to the other wing, where Aaron Jessavala found the time and space to fire a shot across the goal and into the net off of the far post.

Tom Dye’s performance earned him the ‘Costcutters Pan Stores’ Man of the Match award and he almost equalised with a thirty-yard shot that was just tipped around the post by the Fleet keeper.

The Yachtsmen’s last chance fell to Max Draper, whose looping header fell agonisingly behind the angle of post and bar.

Cowes will hope for more luck when they face US Portsmouth at Westwood tomorrow (Saturday) in the FA Vase 2nd Round Qualifying, kick-off 3 pm.

The never say die attitude shown by the young Yachtsmen was rewarded on Saturday, when they snatched a last minute extra-time goal to dump their Wessex Premier opponents Totton & Eling out of the FA Vase.

The home side included Jo Tessem, the ex Saints player, who played against Arsenal in the 2003 FA Cup Final and Sam Webb the ex Newport keeper.

Cowes were under early pressure but at the other end, Jimmy Wykes mis-hit his shot from 5 yards.

Totton were denied by the woodwork on eleven minutes but they soon took the lead, Craig Feeney running through to fire past Chris Norris.

On the half-hour Charlie Allen headed a goal-bound shot off of the line and then Wykes went through a couple of tackles before sending Dominic Burbidge away to equalise from the edge of the box.

Burbidge had an early second half chance but hesitated when well placed though he did manage to set up Leighton Speechley-Price, but he too delayed his shot.

With twenty minutes left Totton regained the lead with a scrappy close range effort after the Cowes defence failed to clear.

Chris Norris kept Cowes in touch with a brilliant flying save and as the match went into injury time Tom Dye’s free-kick was knocked back at the far post and Craig Insley gleefully smashed in the equaliser from close range.

In the second period of extra-time Norris excelled again on three occasions to deny the home side and Lee Davies cleared another effort off of the line, but in the dying seconds, the full-back broke through down the left at the other end and his cross found Jimmy Wykes, running through the static home defence and the eighteen year-old stabbed in the winner before disappearing under a pile of his ecstatic team-mates.

The Yachtsmen now face US Portsmouth at Westwood in the 2nd Qualifying Round on September 24th.
