The Yachtsmen slipped to their third League defeat of the season at Alton on Saturday on a ground where they rarely do well.

The home side dominated the first half hour but failed to make the breakthrough they deserved as the Cowes goal led a charmed life.

Cowes eventually got going before half-time and James Butt curled a shot just wide. Minutes later he hit the post from twenty-five yards and a Mark Augustus screamer was tipped over by the Alton keeper. The half ended with another escape for Alton as, this time, Charlie Smeeton was denied by the woodwork.

On the hour, it all went wrong for Cowes as keeper Dave Thurman did a “Paul Robinson” with an air-shot from an Aidan Bryan back pass. Luckily the ball went just past the post, but from the corner, Alton defender, Brown powerfully headed his side in front.

Cowes almost replied immediately, but Joe Rayner blazed over from two yards out.

On seventy minutes Craig Insley was penalised for a foul in the box and Larvan put Alton two up.

With centre-back, Scott Sampson pushed up front, Alton took further advantage after eighty-two minutes. A cross from the right was parried by Dave Thurman and the skipper Matt Rayner was on hand to nod the ball into the empty net.

This defeat meant that Cowes have now slipped to fifth place in the table and Manager Andy Sampson will be anxious to get his squad back up to full strength.
