Cowes Sports’ fifth win in six Sydenhams Wessex Premier games, took them into third place in the table, but they made hard work of beating mid-table Alton Town.

Ashley Wright and Adam Barsdell both had early chances, but their shots were off target.

The Cowes supporters were becoming agitated by some of Referee Dave Beament’s decisions after bookings for Joe Rayner and Scott Sampson, but on the half-hour Cowes went ahead. Tom Scovell crossed from the left and Adam Barsdell pounced, dummying the keeper and slotting home from close range.

After the break, Barsdell almost increased the lead with an acrobatic effort, but on the hour, Tom Scovell found space on the edge of the area and cleverly steered his shot inside the keeper’s right-hand post.
Five minutes later it was 3-0 as Adam Barsdell tricked his way across the box and scored again, via the post.

Cowes will want to forget the last 15 minutes. First Joe Rayner was sent off for a second yellow card and then Alton hit back as John Gray lobbed the advancing Dave Thurman, to reduce the arrears.

Cowes then lost Simon Butler, with blood streaming from a head wound, caused by what the Referee saw as an accidental elbow. Mr. Beament soon took centre- stage, however, dismissing, first Alton’s John Lancashire and then Cowes’ Wayne Newnham, both for second yellows.

In the dying seconds, an Alton header bounced back from the crossbar and Dave Thurman blocked the rebound shot on the goal-line.
