The final score, on Tuesday night, was somewhat flattering to Brockenhurst, who scored two late goals, but the Yachtsmen dominated this Sydenhams Wessex Premier League match, especially in the first half, when they outplayed the visitors, scoring four times, without reply.

Cowes Manager, Andy Sampson, still handicapped by injuries to eight of his squad, had to draft in youngsters, Tom Dunford and Myles Taylor and they both excelled at a sodden Westwood Park.

Cowes got the perfect start after three minutes, when Phil Willey headed them in front.

The visitors, who recently beat runaway leaders, Poole Town, had no answer to the slick play of their hosts and after Myles Taylor had headed against the cross-bar, Craig Insley punished some slack defending to double the lead.

On the half-hour Simon Williams joined in the fun, when he beat the Brockenhurst keeper the ball and slotted in number three.

The home side’s flowing football brought even more reward in the fortieth minute, as Phil Willey’s looping header dropped in under the bar.

After the break, Brockenhurst came back into it, but the crossbar rescued Cowes and shortly after that, Charlie Smeeton got number five, converting Simon Williams’ cross from the right.

Brockenhurst responded through Darren Cook to reduce the arrears and in the last five minutes, further goals from Kevin Reacord and Paul Liddon gave the score-line a more respectable look, but Cowes were worthy winners and moved back into third place in the table.
