Cowes Sports’ fifth win in six Sydenhams Wessex Premier games, took them into third place in the table, but they made hard work of beating mid-table Alton Town.

Tuesday night’s game exploded into life, with three goals in the first eight minutes.

Joe Rayner opened the scoring when he finished off a first minute attack after Ashley Wright’s shot had been blocked and then Chris Elliott curled a shot beyond the Ringwood keeper after four minutes. The visitors soon hit back, however, when Luke Goran had a free header from six yards out.
Almost immediately Ashley Wright should have extended the Yachtsmen’s lead, but fired over from close range.

On twenty-five minutes, Ashley Wright made amends when he converted a Charlie Smeeton cross.

On the stroke of half-time, Cowes keeper, Dave Thurman misjudged a high cross from Chris Chilcott and could only help the ball into the net at the far post.

On the hour, a James Butt corner was fired back in by Joe Rayner for Scott Sampson to knock in his first goal for Cowes and five minutes later he repeated the feat, converting another James Butt corner for number five.

In the dying minutes, Shaun Leadbetter reduced the arrears again from long range, but it was too little, too late and Cowes consolidated their top three position with another victory.
