BRADING TOWN         3 v 3      NORTHWOOD ST JOHNS  Northwood St Johns win 4-2 on penalties

Westwood Park played host to this seasons Challenge Cup Final and what a game it was, ebbing and flowing throughout.

Brading Town took the lead when JUSTIN HENDERSON’S cross from the left somehow found it’s way into the Northwood net. Northwood responded well and leveled the scores before half time when TOM FOX headed home a corner from the Brading right.

Brading regained the lead when a Scott Lawson long throw from the right skimmed off the head of a Northwood defender to the far post where DANIEL REEVE   headed the ball back across and over the helpless Simon Hayward in the St John’s goal. Brading look the most likely to add a further goal, but Northwood found a second wind and piled on the pressure in search for a second equalizer. With time running out, as the game moved into injury time TOM FOX netted his and Northwood ‘s second goal to send the game into extra time.

Both sides looked a little jaded in extra time with cramp hitting several players. Northwood took the lead for the first time in the game towards the end of the first period of extra time when TOM FOX completed his hat trick earning him the “Man of the Match” award, but Brading would not lie down and themselves pressed hard , but Northwood held on until the 121st minute when with the last kick of the match LUKE HITCHCOX turned in the box and fired the ball into the right corner of the Northwood goal thus meaning the winners of the Challenge Cup would be decided on penalties.

Northwood scored their first penalty kick before keeper Simon Hayward saved Brading first spot kick. Further spot kicks were scored before Brading fourth kick, to keep them in the match, was smashed against the crossbar and secure the cup for the Cowes based side.

The “Man of the Match” award was presented to Northwood St John’s hat-trick hero TOM FOX  by the County Press Editor Alan Marriott, before the Match Officials received their memento’s. Brading Town then picked up their runner’s up medals and finally Northwood St Johns received their winners medals with Captain COLIN MUNNS last in line, lifting the CHALLENGE CUP.
