COWES SPORTS 2 – 1 FOLLANDS SPORTS
With both Managers naming strong starting line ups a close game was expected by the crowd.
After a steady start from both sides Cowes Sports took a 14th minute lead when Adam Sunsberg took a short corner to Danny Hatcher whose excellent cross into the danger zone saw JORDAN BROWNE beat Ryan Gosney, who came out expecting to punch clear, to the ball at his near post to score the opening goal of the contest. Three minutes later the Islanders thought they had doubled their advantage when Jared Wetherick netted, but the ‘goal was ruled out for a push that seemed rather harsh on the home side.
Follands then equalised in the 25th minute when ALEX GASTON’S effort from just outside the penalty area took a deflection off a Cowes defender and looped over the stranded Ed Hatt in goal. Cowes though came straight back at their Premier Division opponents as they regained the lead just two minutes later when a ball across midfield found Danny Hatcher who sent in another superb cross which found JORDAN BROWNE at the far post who netted with a diving header. Jamie Vinton should have leveled the scores in the 35th minute when he met a cross, but sent his header wide of the goal. Three minutes later another chance for the visitors as Dan Mason crashed a shot against the post before the Yachtsmen had the chance to increase their lead but Jared Wetherick headed wide of target.
H-t 2 – 1
Just four minutes into the second half and Jared Wetherick was brought down in the area, regular penalty taker Darren Williams gave the ball to Jordan Browne giving him the chance to complete his hat trick, but unfortunately his kick was saved by Ryan Gosney to keep his side in the game. Follands then came close to equalising again when a short free kick saw their shot deflected wide for a corner, from which Alex Sheath watched his goal-bound header cleared off the line by Max Draper. Mikey Jones, on at half time for Danny Hatcher, then had a shot well saved by their keeper, low to his left before Gosney spilled a Jimmy Wykes effort and a defender had to help him out by clearing the danger. Despite pressing in the final minutes of the game Dan Mason’s shot, that was easily gathered by Ed Hatt, was the closest Follands came to saving themselves from defeat.
