PEWSEY VALE                   0 – 1      COWES SPORTS

Cowes Sports set off for their longest journey of the League season, traveling to Wiltshire to the home of Pewsey Vale who were lying in third place at the start of the game having only lost twice so far, the second of those coming in their last home game against Hythe & Dibden(0 – 1). The Yachtsmen were themselves finding a bit of form recently, 8 pts from 12 in their previous four unbeaten games.

Richie Woodburn was again forced into changes as Darren Williams(suspended) and John McKie(working) both unavailable, Ross Gregory and the recalled Lee Davies came into the starting line up whilst recent signing from East Cowes Vics, Joe Adams was added to the bench. The home side made just one change from their previous game at Amesbury, field replacing Martin in the starting XI. Ironically the Referee was Sean Jenkins, who was in charge at Westwood Park for the visit of Fleet Spurs on December 14th, Sports last game.

The Vale started well and were first to threaten as full back fired wide of the goal before a cross from the left found center forward Ryan Bragg with a free header, but keeper Will Hunt pushed the ball over the bar for a corner. Cowes’ first opportunity came on ten minutes when Jared Wetherick held the ball up well before setting up Jordan Browne for a shot at goal, unfortunately his effort flew across the goal and out for a goal kick.  A good build up in the 17th minute ended with Nathan Lewis’s shot being well saved by the home keeper. the Islanders then had the ball in the Pewsey net when Jared Wetherick headed a cross from the right back for Lee Davies to net, but a raised flag by Assistant Referee Leeford Antwi ruled the goal out, what for was any ones guess?? Jared Wetherick then tested the keeper with a volley that was gathered at the second attempt as the first period remained goal-less at half time,

H-t 0 – 0

Cowes came out for the second half looking refreshed and began to dominate for longer periods and looking a bit fitter particularily towards the end of the game. Early on Jared Wetherick again showed his brilliance at holding the ball up under pressure from a defender before trying to find Jordan Browne, the pass was cut out by a defender, but the loose ball fell to Ross Gregory who could only send his shot over the bar. Then, in the 55th minute, a ball down the line by Keelan Sainsbury saw Joe Phelps chase and get too first before sending in a teasing cross towards the back post where LEE DAVIES met it with a volley that crept in between the keeper and his right hand upright to give the Yachtsmen a deserved lead. From the restart Pewsey Vale were unlucky not to equalise when Will Hunt produced a very smart save with his feet from a Ricky Franklin shot, but the rebound fell nicely for substitute Michael Martin to send the ball goal-wards, only for Ryan Gregory to head the ball off the goal-line and away for a corner. Joe Adams was sent on in place of Jared Wetherick, Jordan Browne moving up front and Joe was instrumental in play immediately as he played an exquisite ball, splitting the home defence, for Lee Davies to run from well behind the home back line before netting, only for Assistant Referee Ido Davids to raise the flag for offside, which was an absolute joke, similar to the Raheem Sterling  decision in the recent Man City v Liverpool game. Jordan Browne was then put through on goal but keeper pulled of a great save to deny him a goal. Joe Adams then beat ab defender to a cross from the right to send a looping header that was dipping into the goal, but their keeper just managed to get a hand to the ball and push it over the bar for a corner.  Joe Adams again done well down the left cutting inside before playing the ball to Nathan Lewis whose shot was superbly kept out by the keeper only for the ball to fall to Nathan again who had a simple tap in, but he went for power and sent the ball over the bar. Having used all three subs available Pewsey Ended the game with ten men when center half was carried off with a foot injury late in the game as Cowes held on to a vital three points that keeps the Island side hanging to the shirt tails of the teams above in the table.
