COWES SPORTS 3 v 1 NORTHWOOD ST JOHNS
Due to Cowes Sports 1st XI having a free Saturday and the fact that the recent bad weather meant that the Reserves original opponents(Brading Town) were involved in a Hampshire Cup match it was arranged(with the help of the IOWDFA) that the Cowes Sports v Northwood St Johns Gold Cup tie would be played in stead.
Richie Woodburn rested Joe Phelps whilst Jordan Browne dropped to the bench with John McKie coming back in. Ed Hatt was back in goal as Will Hunt was ineligible for the game having played for Northwood in their first round drubbing of Ryde Saints(6-1). Northwood Manager, John Cook named a strong squad of 15 of which 12 had, at some stage in their career, played for the Yachtsmen. A tough encounter was expected by all and nobody was let down.
As expected, Cowes Sports started well and an early ball over the top found John McKie whose scuffed shot had Northwood keeper, Simon Hayward, scrambling across his goal to save. Nathan Lewis the had a goal-bound effort cleared off the goal line by a defender. The visitors first foray forward should have seen them take the lead when Matt Kirkpatrick got in behind Ryan Gregory before squaring the ball to Alex Harvey who should have scored, but miss hit his shot and it bobbled wide of target. Lee Davies fired across the goal but wide of the post before Ollie Wilson crossed and Nathan Lewis saw his shot pushed over the bar by Simon Hayward. Alex Harvey then sent a shot goal-wards beating Ed Hatt but hitting the top of the crossbar. Simon Hayward was again the hero for Northwood as he managed to save a header that was sneaking into the corner of his goal before Kai Barnes and Simon Hayward collided in blocking a Keelan Sainsbury cross, both having to receive some treatment. Then, just before the break Keelan Sainsbury saw his shot deflected inches wide of the goal for a corner as the first half remained goalless.
H-t 0 – 0
Cowes continued to push forward in the early stages of the second half as once again Simon Hayward denied Cowes the lead when he pushed over a Lee Davies shot, from the resulting corner John McKie fired well over the bar. Was it going to be one of those days? was the question starting to be asked. Then, in the 58th minute Cowes were caught on the break as a long ball down the line found Alex Harvey who in turn found MATTY KIRKPATRICK totally unmarked in the middle and he made no mistake in beating Cowes keeper Ed Hatt to give the visitors the lead, which it has to be said they had worked very hard for as a team. Northwood now had something to play for and as a whole they threw their bodies in the way of everything Cowes could create, despite having plenty of possession the Wessex Div 1 side were struggling to create any clear cut chances. Darren Williams(62), Joe Adams(64) and Jordan Browne(73) replaced Ross Gregory(62), Lee Davies(64) and injured Jared Wetherick(73) respectively as the Senior side started to look a bit desperate in trying to find an equaliser. With just seven minutes remaining a corner was won on the Cowes right, the ball was sent into towards the near post where substitute JOE ADAMS met it to send a header past Simon Haywards outstretched hand to level the scores. Buoyed by this and with superior fitness Cowes looked for a second goal and with extra time just two minutes away a ball across the face of goal found found JOE ADAMS beyond the far post, he cut back inside and shot at goal where the ball somehow found a way past Simon Hayward to end up in the back of the net giving Cowes the lead for the first time in the tie. Northwood forced a corner in the final minute for which keeper Simon Hayward went forward, eventually Cowes cleared their lines towards top-scorer JORDAN BROWNE who kept his nerve to plant the ball in the bottom left corner of Northwood’ s goal to seal the win and book their semi final spot.
