Sydenhams Football League(Wessex) – Division 1 – 26/04/14
COWES SPORTS 3 – 0 PEWSEY VALE
Another League campaign was brought to an end at Westwood Park as Cowes Sports played host to Pewsey Vale. Although third place was guaranteed for the Island side Manager Richie Woodburn was keen to see the side perform to its full potential with Gold Cup places up for grabs. Max Draper, Jared Wetherick and Joe Adams were all restored to the starting line up with John McKie, Lee Davies and Ollie Wilson dropping to the bench. Pewsey Vale, having beaten Amesbury Town 5 – 1 two days earlier, made two changes to the team on duty for that game, Danny Kilderry and Dan Reynolds coming in for Michael Martin and Kane Lever whilst only two substitutes were named.
Prior to kick off, LEE BRAY, Results Secretary for the Sydenhams Football League(Wessex) presented Manager Richie Woodburn and skipper Craig Insley with the ” Sydenhams ‘ Club of the Month’ award for March, before then handing out the Supporters Club Awards for their ‘ PLAYER of the SEASON’ — LEE DAVIES, and ‘YOUNG PLAYER OF THE YEAR’ — JORDAN BROWNE. Well done to both players on a very successful campaign. All pictures taken by Peter Jeffery
It was the visitors that created the early chances with skipper Ryan Banks trying his luck from distance that sailed over Ed Hatt’s crossbar before from a corner Gareth Robb sent a free header wide of target, both chances before five minutes had been played. Having survived the early chances Cowes started to find their feet and a teasing seventh minute cross from the right by Max Draper found no Cowes player in the box to take advantage. Only three minutes later though before the Island side did find the breakthrough when Ryan Gregory’s superb free kick delivery, from the half way line in front of the stand, found Joe Phelps at the far post, he headed the ball back across the face of the goal where top scorer JORDAN BROWNE headed the ball into the goal for a one nil lead, his 26th league goal and 30th goal in total of the season. With the goal coming so early in the game some may have thought it might be a question of How many?? but to be fair to Pewsey Vale they played very well having plenty of possession without threatening that much. Right back Max Draper sent in another great cross from the right in the 24th minute, this time Jared Wetherick got on the end of it but could not direct his header towards goal. Another cross field ball from the right was met by a thumping left foot volley by Gareth Bricknell, but keeper Richie Payne was at his best to tip the ball over the bar for a corner. Shortly before half time Gareth Bricknell set up Nathan Lewis but he sent his shot wide of the goal as just the one goal separated the two teams at half time.
H-t 1 – 0
Cowes started the second half strong and took just seven minutes to double their lead when Gareth Bricknell played a one-two with Jared Wetherick down the left before cutting inside and crossing for JORDAN BROWNE to send another header past keeper Richie Payne for his and Cowes’ second goal of the game. Cowes then effectively put the game to bed in the 56th minute when a through ball down the right had the Pewsey defenders claiming offside, but JOE ADAMS ran through from beyond those defenders before coolly slipping the ball past their keepers’ left hand into the unguarded goal. Still Pewsey battled on and were unlucky on the hour when Tom Ritchie saw his shot from distance cannon of the Cowes crossbar straight back into the grateful arms of keeper Ed Hatt. Gareth Bricknell, Nathan Lewis and Jordan Browne were all replaced by John McKie, Ollie Wilson and Lee Davies respectively and it was the three subs that caused the visitors problems, Ollie Wilson played in John McKie who lobbed the onrushing keeper but could only watch as the ball cleared the bar as well. Then a free kick routine that had been worked on in training nearly paid off, Lee Davies ran over the ball for Ryan Gregory to play it sideways for John McKie to shoot, his effort found Lee Davies who could only send the ball into the arms of their keeper. Lee Davies then had another chance to increase the lead but he shot wide of goal. With the game over Pewsey vale had a couple of late chances as Adam Field headed over the bar and Tom Ritchie headed wide of the goal as a third consecutive clean sheet was earned.
