Sports were on their travels to Vicarage Lane for a tough game against former Wessex side Brading Town who had already beaten East Cowes Vics and played well in a 3-1 defeat at Newport IW.

1st half XI – Ed Hatt, Max Draper, Joe Butcher, Craig Insley c, Aidan Bryan, Joe Phelps, Nathan Lewis, Gareth Bricknell, Jared Wetherick, John McKie, Joe Adams

As expected Brading were a hard nut to crack but the Yachtsmen were well up for the task ahead. Just 11 minutes on the clock and Cowes were ahead when Gareth Bricknell’s corner was only cleared to JOE ADAMS on the edge of the box, he blasted the ball past Ben Self in the Brading goal. Nip and tuck for the rest of the first half as Cowes looked threatening whilst the home side defended well, occasionally venturing upfield to test the Cowes back line. Five minutes before the break and the lead was doubled when JOE ADAMS was alert to nip in front of a defender from a short goal kick, beat off the attentions of another defender before netting his and Cowes’ second goal.

2nd half XI – Aaron Bunday, Max Draper, Lee Davies, Craig Insley c, Aidan Bryan, Ross Gregory, Nathan Lewis, Gareth Bricknell, Jordan Browne, Dexter Malin, Jez Conway

Eight minutes into the second half a throw on the left found Lee Davies who sent in a sweet cross for JEZ CONWAY to volley home a third goal for the visiting side and effectively end the game as a contest. Cowes began too dominate, Jez Conway raced down the right before crossing to Jordan Browne who neatly laid the ball back to Dexter Malin who sent his shot over the bar. Dexter then sent a ball into the box for Nathan Lewis to test the home keeper, but Ben Self produced an excellent one handed save. Aaron Bunday was then tested by Brading but he also saved well low to his right before, with just two minutes remaining great build up play from the Yachtsmen saw Jordan Browne play in ROSS GREGORY who broke into the box only to see his first attempt blocked by Ben Self, but he made no mistake second time round to net number four and complete another impressive victory.

Cowes Sports finished their pre – season with a very tough looking fixture as they welcomed last seasons third placed side in the Wessex Premier, Follands Sports, whose opening league game against AFC Portchester had been postponed. Although missing a few players the visitors gave some fringe players the chance to shine.

1st half XI – Ed Hatt, Keelan Sainsbury, Lee Davies, Ryan Gregory c, Aidan Bryan, Ross Gregory, Joe Adams, Joe Phelps, Jared Wetherick, Jordan Browne, Joe Butcher

Inside two minutes the home side found themselves behind as a free kick from the Cowes right into the box saw Ed Hatt come out too collect only for skipper RYAN GREGORY to get a touch on the ball with his head to send the ball into the empty net. Not deterred by the early set back, the Yachtsmen fought their way back into the game and drew themselves level in the 23rd minute when an inch perfect through ball from Jordan Browne saw JARED WETHERICK onto before tucking it past the visiting keeper.  A quick break in the 35th minute by Lee Davies who crossed to Joe Adams, in turn he fed Jordan Browne into the area who was tripped by a defender, Referee Craig Sandoe had no hesitation in pointing to the spot. ROSS GREGORY confidently tucked the ball past the keepers left hand into the corner of the goal to put the home side ahead. A minute before half time Jordan Browne’s little touch sent Lee Davies into Follands area, he was clipped and went to ground and a second penalty was awarded to Cowes, again ROSS GREGORY stepped up, this time thumping the ball down the middle to increase Cowes’ lead.

2nd half XI – Ed Hatt, Max Draper, Craig Insley, Ryan Gregory c, Aidan Bryan, Oliver Wilson, Jez Conway, Dexter Malin, Jared Wetherick, Jordan Browne, Joe Butcher

Early second half efforts from Jordan Browne and Ollie Wilson went wide and was saved respectively before on the hour mark Jared Wetherick was pushed over inside the area and a third penalty was given, JORDAN BROWNE comfortably netted a fourth goal for Cowes. Follands rallied a bit with a couple of shots at goal but nothing too trouble Ed Hatt in the Cowes goal. The closest the visitors came to scoring a second was near the end when the ball bobbled around the box before Ed Hatt managed too gather. Joe Butcher again showed his blistering pace down the Cowes left before pulling the ball back to DEXTER MALIN to add a fifth goal for the Island side to complete a very impressive destruction of Follands Sports.
