SYDENHAMS Football League
Division One — Saturday September 29th 2014:-
COWES SPORTS 3 v 1 ANDOVER NEW STREET
Attendance — 62
For the first time in a long while Cowes Sports named the same starting line up as their previous fixture(Hants Senior Cup defeat at Farnborough) for the League game at Westwood Park against Andover New Street who only managed one point so far from their four games.
Prior to kick off Captain RYAN GREGORY was presented with the “TEAM OF THE MONTH” award for August by IAN HOARE(right, League Chairman) and JONATHAN WADDINGTON(left, from Sydenhams Ryde Branch) as shown in the picture taken by Peter Jeffery.
The Yachtsmen were fast out of the traps making their intent known as from kick off Enrique Villar has tested the visitors keeper with a shot from the left side of the box within 20 seconds, but Dave Tasker was alert to the danger and saved with a strong left hand. Two minutes in and Keelan Sainsbury saw his cross into the New Street area flicked on by a defender into the path of Jared Wetherick whose volley was straight at the keeper. With their first venture forward into the Cowes half Andover New Street stunned the Yachtsmen by taking the lead. In the 5th minute Keelan Sainsbury lost the ball near the corner flag before it was sent into the box where Shane Lock laid it back for CRAIG HARMAN to smash it past Ed Hatt’s right hand into the net as Westwood fell silent. A big test for Richie Woodburn’s team. Nerves were showing throughout the home side as a poor clearance in the 15th minute saw Shane Reidy try his luck from distance, but Ed Hatt was down quick to save. Slowly Cowes began to see more of the ball and exert some pressure on the visiting defence. Midway through the first half a Joe Adams short corner from the Cowes left to Enrique Villar saw the Spaniard again test Dave Tasker, this time he could only parry the ball out to Keelan Sainsbury who watched as his effort was tipped over the crossbar by their keeper. Jared Wetherick then volleyed wide of target just before the half hour mark. Finally the Island side got their equaliser in the 32nd minute when JORDAN BROWNE pounced on a mistake to slot the ball past the advancing keeper.
H-t 1 – 1
Following a half time rollocking Cowes came out for the second half with something too prove. Keelan Sainsbury crossed from the right for Jared Wetherick but his shot was well blocked by a defender early on. Cowes struggled to find a way through until they brought John McKie on in the 65th minute. Nathan Lewis sent in a cross from the left which saw John McKie get in front of the defender but his header went wide of the goal. New Street then had a great chance to retake the lead when a corner from their left found Liam Wilkins at the far post but he could not hit the target. The lively John McKie clipped a ball into the path of Enrique Villar in the 8oth minute, he ran into the area before knocking the ball past Dave Tasker who clipped him and although an open goal was begging Enrique could not keep his feet and a penalty was awarded and the keeper sent off, midfielder Liam Wilkins taking over in goal. Despite the stand in keepers attempts to put him off, KEELAN SAINSBURY remained calm to lift the ball into the left corner of the net, giving Cowes the lead for the first time in the game.
That should have become three in the 89th minute when the impressive Enrique Villar crossed into the six yard box but somehow John McKie managed to clear the crossbar from close range. In injury time a third goal was added when another Keelan Sainsbury cross gave John McKie the chance to shoot, his effort was touched goal-wards by JORDAN BROWNE and although their keeper grabbed the ball, the Assistant flagged that it had crossed the line, much to their annoyance, and the three points were sealed as the Yachtsmen maintained their unbeaten start to the League campaign.
