Division One – Saturday November 8th 2014
COWES SPORTS 2 A 0 TADLEY CALLEVA
(Abandoned after 62 minutes)
Attendance — 97
Cowes Manager, Richie Woodburn was forced into a change in defence, Nathan Lewis coming in for the injured Jez Conway whilst Joe Butcher was
preferred to Jared Wetherick, who dropped to the bench.
The Yachtsmen attacked from the first whistle on the slick Westwood surface as heavy rain started to take it’s toll on the pitch. An early attack saw Gareth Bricknell’s shot saved at the foot of the post by the visitors’ keeper Tom Hindmarsh, then a Joe Butcher effort was blocked for a corner.
Tadley then threatened the Cowes goal and Ed Hatt was relieved to see a striker’s lob narrowly clear his crossbar. Gareth Bricknell then turned provider as his through ball sent Joe Butcher clear down the left but his shot was again parried away for another corner.
Another Cowes attack down the Tadley left saw Joe Adams draw another save from their overworked keeper but he could do nothing to stop JOE
BUTCHER from opening the scoring after 38 minutes, when a cross from the right was only half cleared, leaving the midfielder to confidently slot
the ball home from ten yards. Just before the break Joe Butcher again broke through the Tadley defence, but was foiled by a last-ditch tackle.
H-t 1 – 0
During the half-time break, the incessant rain forced the Referee Rob Ablitt to consider an abandonment, but after a lengthy inspection he
decided restart the game. Cowes were well in control of the second half and doubled their lead after 55 minutes, when JORDAN BROWNE pounced to score from close range after a shot had been parried by the Tadley keeper. The visitors were getting increasingly agitated as the conditions worsened and 5 minutes later their prayers were answered when the Referee called a halt to the proceedings as the ball was sticking in
the standing water that had accumulated down the middle of the pitch. The big crowd let the Referee know how they felt about the decision and
Cowes will feel hard done by as they had comfortably dominated their unbeaten, top of the table rivals who had only conceded 3 goals in
their previous 8 games.
It was later learned that the sides will meet again 7 days later on November 15th at Westwood, kick-off 3 pm.
