SYDENHAMS FOOTBALL LEAGUE
Division One — Saturday February 28th
TADLEY CALLEVA 0 v 3 COWES SPORTS
Attendance – 40
Cowes Sports made the trip to Tadley Calleva – who were second in the table, knowing that this was a must win game for them if they wanted to be in the mix for promotion at the end of the season. Having beaten their hosts back in November this was likely to be the Yachtsmen’s toughest game so far, although the home side had only drawn at Romsey Town and Downton in their previous two League games and had lost a Cup match 5 – 1 at home to Winchester City a few days earlier.
Cowes were asked to make a quick start to the match by the Gaffer, and they certainly did that. With barely a minute on the clock a long ball out of defence saw the home keeper rush towards the edge of his area too collect, but unsure whether he was in or out of his box John McKie challenged and the loose ball fell to ALEKSANDER PRZESPOLEWSKI who calmly lifted the ball over all before him into the empty net for the first goal of the match. Ryan Gregory was then called upon to clear from near his own goal, although the ‘offside’ flag had been raised anyhow. Further joy for the visitors in the 19th minute when Jared Wetherick put a cross into the home area where JOHN MCKIE met it with a glancing header that nestled nicely in the left corner of Tom Hindmarsh’s goal and a two nil lead. The Island side were rampant and were looking too put the game too bed before half time and came close on 24 minutes when Aleks Przespolewski broke through the home defence and should probably squared the ball to John McKie who would have had an open goal to hit, however Aleks chose too shoot and his effort was parried away for a corner by their keeper. Shortly before the break Joe Adams saw his goal-bound effort pushed away for a corner from which Ryan Gregory headed just wide of the goal.
H-t 0 – 2
Tadley Calleva came out for the second half a different side and Scott Kinge went close with a header before Callum Bush fired just over the bar from distance. Despite some tough tackling Cowes defence, marshalled superbly by skipper Craig Insley withstood everything that the home side could muster. John McKie forced their keeper into making a great save four minutes from time before a minute later the result was secured when a cheeky flick by Jared Wetherick on the right touchline found JIMMY WYKES who used his pace to beat his marker before sending the ball over their keeper into the right side netting of his goal from the right corner of the penalty area as Cowes attacked. Although it may not have been the prettiest of games Cowes worked very hard to get the result they needed that keeps them in with a chance of finishing in the top two. It was also learned after that Amesbury had beaten Team Solent 3 – 2 , Amesbury Town being the next side to face Cowes.
