Division 3 – Saturday October 24th 2015

For the first time in a couple of weeks Manager Russ Chapman had a squad of 14 to pick from, which meant subs were available to use! Still missing thou was  Jake Cass, who will hopefully be back training in a couple of weeks and captain Jordon Whittle whose away in Cornwall, but, on the plus side, Ryan Flynn was back in the squad after his hamstring injury and the experienced Jaymie Icke was in goal.

Straight from the kick-off Cowes ‘A’ took the game to Brading, and their passing and movement was so much better than it had been in our previous couple of matches. After only 5 mins Cowes were awarded a penalty when the pace of Nicky Vyse caused their defence problems and he was bought down in the box. NICHOLAS VYSE duly took the spot kick and scored to give the home side the lead. For the next 20mins Cowes totally dominated play and should have extended their lead. Slowly Cowes were dragged into playing the way Brading wanted, Cowes were not closing down and lost their shape. Just before half-time Brading had their only effort on goal, but Jaymie Icke was down well to turn the ball behind for a corner. Nothing came of it and the young Yachtsmen went into the break 1-0 up.

H-t 1 – 0

During the interval the team were reminded about how well we had started the game, and the importance of using the width of the pitch to create space for the attackers to exploit. It must have sunk in, as the youngsters flew out of the blocks in the second half. On 50mins Cowes were awarded a corner from which ALEX BOIRAND rose highest to put the home side 2-0 up. Five minutes later JOE CRAIG skipped past a couple of challenges to score and make it 3-0, then on 60mins, after some good team build up play, JOE CRAIG made it 4-0. The ‘A’ side were now playing with a lot more confidence and commitment and in the 70th minute JOE CRAIG scored again to complete a deserved hat-trick and make it 5-0. Ten minutes later and a 6th goal was added when Sam Phelps and Jordon Chapman opened up the Brading defence to create space for Joe, whose lay off to RYAN BRENCHLEY, allowed him to score on his return to the team. Unfortunately Cowes did not keep a clean sheet, as a miss hit cross found its way into the top corner just 2mins from time to give Brading their goal. This was a much improved performance and hopefully the lads can carry this form forward to the forthcoming fixtures, especially when everyone is fit and available.
