RUSSELL COTES CUP sponsored by HAROLD G WALKER SOLICITORS
1st Round – Tuesday October 20th 2015
COWES SPORTS 3 – 1 HYTHE & DIBDEN
Attendance – 67
Just when Hythe & Dibden had thought that they had said goodbye to a trip to Westwood Park they are drawn away to Cowes Sports in the Russell Cotes Cup 1st round. The Island side made just one change to their starting line up with James Butt replacing the Graduating Max Draper at right back. They did however welcome back Aidan Sainsbury and Charlie Smeeton from suspension, Keelan Sainsbury from a short break and Nathan Lewis who had missed the Bemerton HH game through work, a strong bench indeed.
A bit of a shaky start from Cowes as they gave the ball away cheaply allowing Hythe’s forward to break through on goal but Ed Sanders last ditch tackle saved the day. John McKie then cut out a pass back and got his shot away but a fantastic save from Jonathon Page in the Hythe goal kept his team on level terms. Ollie Wilson was next to test the visitors keeper with a shot that took a deflection off a defender giving the keeper a comfortable save. 10 then fired just wide of the Cowes goal before Jason Malcolmson saw his effort fly just wide of the Watersiders goal. Hythe were certainly making life difficult for their Premier Division hosts. Eventually the breakthrough came for Cowes in the 41st minute and summed up the game up to that point. A corner from the Cowes right was not cleared by the Hythe defence, the ball bobbled around the box before EDWARD SANDERS finally back heeled it into the goal, much to the relief of all at Westwood.
H-T 1 = 0
John McKie had an early shot in the second half headed off the Hythe goal-line before the visitors stunned the home side by snatching an equaliser in the 52nd minute when LIAM EDGAR headed home a free kick with the Cowes defence standing still awaiting an offside flag that never came. James Butt then had a corner from the left tipped over by Jonathon Page from underneath his crossbar. Matt Smith then watched as Ed Hatt tipped his shot over the bar. With twenty minutes left Hythe thought they had taken the lead when Nick Dwyer saw his header hit the underside of the crossbar, bounce down before being cleared off the line, Hythe claimed the ball had fully crossed the line, but the Assistant disagreed and the score remained level at 1 – 1. In the 80th minute substitute Charlie Smeeton broke down the Cowes left before pulling the ball back into the area, unfortunately it rolled behind Jordan Browne, but ran nicely to JOHN MCKIE who composed himself before burying the ball in the back of the Hythe net and put Cowes back in front. Five minutes later and the result was settled when another substitute, AIDAN SAINSBURY netted Cowes’ third off the keeper and left back to complete the scoring and secure Cowes place in the draw for the second round.
