Attendance – 39

A mid week trip to Gang Warily for the Yachtsmen to take on highly rated Blackfield & Langley, managed by GLENN HOWES, who started his senior football at Cowes Sports when aged 17. Nathan Lewis, Ollie Wilson and Charlie Smeeton all came into the starting XI replacing John McKie(slight injury) with Jason Malcolmson and Keelan Sainsbury dropping to the bench.

On a greasy pitch and with it raining throughout conditions were difficult from the start. Just three minutes into the game and Ollie Wilson lost possession in midfield and Ekow Elliott spotting Ed Hatt off his line tried his luck from distance but his effort drifted wide of the left hand post. The home side had a lot of possession but could not find a way past the Cowes back line and keeper, until the 40th minute when a high tackle on the edge of the Cowes box saw the ball run wide to SAM LANAHAN who looked as though he may have been offside, he kept calm looked around to see no flag before striking the ball past Ed Hatt to give the home side the lead. Minutes after and left back Josh Buck appeared to dive two footed into Max Draper in front of the Assistant Referee, after a delay the Referee, Mike Desborough, only produced a yellow card for the full back, could maybe should have been red. Blackfield failed to clear the resulting free kick and the ball ended up in the back of their net, but the offside flag was up despite a defender appearing to be on the line with the keeper. Once again decisions going the way of the ‘bigger’ team. Right on half time Ed Sanders pushed forward to shoot at goal but a defender deflected the ball wide for another Cowes corner.

H-t 1 – 0

Cowes should of had an equaliser when some excellent work by Dexter Malin on the right saw him pull the ball back to Nathan Lewis who fired wide of goal. Home striker Ekow Elliott broke through but his first effort was blocked by Ed Hatt and the rebound was headed off the line by Max Draper. RICO WILSON bundled home his sides second goal at the back post in the 65th minute after Jez Conway had been beaten easily down the Cowes left. Although Blackfield continued to press forward the Yachtsmen’s defence held out but rarely looked like troubling Max Frampton in the home goal.

Blackfield & Langley were by far the best side Cowes have faced so far this season and will certainly be near the top come the end of the season.
