Division 3 – Saturday October 31st 2015

The Jekyll and Hyde performances from the ‘A’ team continued against St Helens Reserves on Saturday. The previous week against Brading the side had played really well, but this week was forgettable. It didn’t help with Tom O’Brien and Joe Craig both pulling out of the squad due to injury and illness respectively on Friday and with Jake Cass still a week or two away from returning from injury, but regardless of that, the remaining squad should have been good enough to take the three points. Despite St Helens winning every challenge in midfield Cowes’ defence were solid and thanks to them the home side spent nearly 90% of the first half on the attack, but kept giving the ball away in dangerous areas but no one seemed to want to shoot. The young Yachtsmen did however take the lead in the 43min. The ball broke to FIN RAY who, after a scramble in their box, scored from close range to take Cowes into the break 1-0 up.

As with the first half, much of the time was spent in and around St Helens area, but Cowes kept missing chance after chance. Eventually another break through on 70mins when Ryan Flynn played through RYAN BRENCHLEY to score a second goal for Cowes. That should have been the game wrapped up, as from the very next attack, St Helens had a player sent off for a second bookable offence. Unfortunately, Cowes also went down to 10 men moments later. Despite not having any more subs, Manager Russ Chapman was forced into taking off Jordon Whittle, who had himself been booked earlier in the match to save him getting a red card. Excuses cannot be made for the lad, but he had been on the receiving end of some harsh challenges and when he was punched right in front of the Referee, who took no action what so ever, you could see he had lost his composure and temper. This break in play did not help the home side because St Helens started to dominate the midfield again and scored with 7mins to go. They were awarded a free kick on the edge of the box which was smashed into the top corner, giving Wilfred Armfield (on as a substitute for Owen Stevens) no chance. The equaliser came with just a minute left when the Bermuda Triangle fell on Northwood Rec as Cowes’ midfield went missing, allowing St Helens to break forward in numbers. A fortunate ricochet in the area fell to their winger, who hit a first time shot into the net. The boys need to learn how to see out a game, as it is the second time they have let 2 points slip from a winning position.
