James Taylor brought his Team Solent side across the water for this League game at Westwood Park on the back of a last minute defeat in the F A Vase against Cadbury Heath, whilst the Islanders had enjoyed revenge with a 3 – 1 victory over Fareham Town, having lost 0 – 5 at Cams Alders earlier in the season.

Once again Manager Richie Woodburn rotated his squad making four changes, James Butt, Nathan Lewis, Ollie Wilson and Dexter Malin were replaced in the starting line up by Max Draper, Tom Scovell, Keelan Sainsbury and Jordan Browne.

Team Solent started well and were unlucky not to take the lead in the 3rd minute when Matt Sheedy’s header was cleared off his own goal line by Tom Scovell. John McKie tested keeper Passingham who saved well. Another attack from the visitors saw Cowes keeper, Ed Hatt gather the ball at the 2nd attempt before he was then again called into action to push Jesse Waller-Lassen’s free kick away to safety. Although Team Solent had by far the lions share of the ball it was The Yachtsmen that took the lead in the 40th minute when a great cross-field ball from Charlie Smeeton picked out JOHN MCKIE on the left of the students area, he controlled the ball took it on before beating his marker and firing the ball into the right corner of the goal much to the delight of most of the crowd.

H-t 1 – 0

The second half started as the first ended with Cowes Sports adding to their goal tally, although Solent had the chance to clear, John McKie’s persistence paid off as he won the ball back, played a defence splitting ball to CHARLIE SMEETON who placed the ball into the top left corner of the Students goal. Cowes were now buzzing  and Charlie Smeeton fired over after John McKie’s shot had been blocked. Influential Solent skipper Jesse Waller-Lassen went close for the Southampton based side but sent his shot wide of Ed Hatt’s goal. In the 77th minute substitute Dexter Malin beat three defenders before crossing from the bye-line for JOHN MCKIE to blast home from 15 yards to add a third goal for the Island side. Just two minutes later and a fourth was added which was a little fortunate. JOHN MCKIE got the ball on the right and tried to find Charlie Smeeton in the middle, but instead clipped the ball over the stranded keeper and into the net thus completing his hat trick. All hell let loose in the 81st minute when the sides two skippers clashed near the half way line. Jesse Waller-Lassen committed a nasty foul on Aidan Bryan who reacted. Most of the two sides then ran to get involved, in particular Solents center half whose hands were raised against a Cowes player. Once things had calmed down, both Aidan Bryan and Jesse Waller-Lassen were shown straight red cards, but to the amazement of everyone their center half was only shown a yellow. The game resumed and there were no further incidents leaving Cowes comfortable victors, a result that moved them up to 6th in the table.
