A trip to the New Forest for the Yachtsmen as the visited New Milton Town from Div 1 for this League Cup 2nd round tie. With a strong wind and fine rain blowing across the pitch towards the stand both sides played very well, trying to keep the ball on the deck as much as possible.

Cowes started brightly and had the ball in the New Milton net as early as the 5th minute, but an offside flag ruled the goal out. Taylor Leonard then tried his luck from some 35yards out having spotted Ed Hatt off his line but the ball drifted just wide of the right hand post. The Island side took the lead in the 19th minute when a long pass from right back James Butt from inside his own half picked out CHARLIE SMEETON who beat his marker, rounded their keeper to slot the ball into the empty goal. Most of the play was centered around the middle third of the pitch as both sides looked too attack but found the defence’s in control. Aidan Sainsbury forced Piotr Jacucha, in the New Milton goal, to save down low to his right. Seconds before half time Jason Malcolmson’s back pass let in Dominic Falco but, with Ed Hatt stranded out of his goal, he sent his effort over the bar.

H-t 0 – 1

Cowes looked strong in the second half, Aidan Sainsbury sent a corner into the box from the Cowes left, but Jordan Browne could not make contact with the ball as New Milton survived, but not for long. In the 56th minute CHARLIE SMEETON was tripped just inside the area, Referee Colin Hubbard immediately pointed to the spot and from the resulting spot kick Cowes doubled their advantage. Just four minutes later and the visitors were three goals to the good as EDWARD SANDERS headed home a Aidan Sainsbury corner from close range. From the restart New Milton played the ball forward down their right where their forward was a good couple of yards offside, but no flag was raised, However their player failed to hit the target sending his shot wide of Ed Hatt’s right hand post. Minutes later though Jason Malcolmson was adjudged to have pulled down their forward and substitute SHANE SHERIDAN stepped up to net from the penalty spot to give the home side a glimmer of hope. Any thoughts of a comeback were extinguished in the 82nd minute when Charlie Smeeton played the ball back to AIDAN SAINSBURY to clip the ball over their keeper and into the goal. Cowes substitutes John McKie and Max Draper had chances to add further goals but failed to find the back of the net as the Islanders progressed to the third round with ease.
