Following a two week weather break the Yachtsmen returned too League action at Westwood Park where they welcomed Bournemouth Poppies to the Island, the team that had condemned the Islanders to relegation back in 2010 by winning 5 – 4 at Westwood in the final game of the season.

Manager Richie Woodburn made a few changes from the side that had lost the local derby at Newport, Tom Scovell returned from suspension and Jason Malcolmson came in at left back whilst youngsters Ollie McArthur(16) and Sam Phelps(17) were amongst the substitutes named.

A lively start from Cowes saw Tom Scovell release John McKie in the second minute who crossed to Jared Wetherick whose shot was blocked by Elliott Broome in the Poppies goal. Jason Malcolmson then burst through their defence but blasted the ball over the bar with only the keeper to beat. It was the Islanders who drew first blood in the 20th minute when Jared Wetherick was fouled just inside the left corner of their area and JEZ CONWAY stepped up to confidently give Cowes the lead from the penalty spot. However the lead was short lived as Bournemouth were awarded a penalty of their own just a minute later when Aidan Bryan clipped Ami Rosario near the bye line and SHIMA AMI netted from 12 yards. An even period followed until the 40th minute when Cowes regained the lead. Jordan Browne played the ball into JOHN MCKIE who after beating a couple of players and the keeper rolled the ball into the right side of the Bournemouth goal as shown below.

McKie scores second v Bournemouith 16-01 This gave the home side the advantage at the interval.

 H-t 2 – 1

Cowes came out flying for the second half and increased their lead in the 46th minute when Keelan Sainsbury’s ball down the right touchline released Dexter Malin who got to the bye line before pulling the ball back for JARED WETHERICK to side foot the ball into the left corner of Elliott Broome’s goal.  Wetherick fires home number three 16-01 Whilst both teams huffed and puffed neither could create many good goal scoring opportunities, the best coming for Bournemouth when Dom Allen was through on goal, but sent his effort wide of target. In the 73rd minute Keelan Sainsbury was replaced by 17 year old Sam Phelps for his Wessex League debut, he settled in nicely at right back and certainly looks a excellent prospect for the future. Cowes completed the scoring with six minutes remaining when along ball down the left to John McKie was played into Tom Scovell, he played it out to the right where Simon Williams dummied to allow DEXTER MALIN to fire home from just inside the area to secure a comfortable win.  Malin shoots for fourth 16-01 Another valuable three points that keeps the Islanders in seventh position at present, although having played up to five games more than some.
