Cowes, buoyed by their weekend victory over Bournemouth, entertained Brockenhurst, whom they had beaten 4 – 2 earlier in the season, for a place in the Quarter Finals of the League Cup. Cowes fielded the same starting XI as their previous game with the only change on the bench – Aidan Sainsbury returning from suspension replacing Simon Williams. The game was played on a pitch that was freezing on top but still soft underneath.

Just two minutes on the clock and a mistake by Aidan Bryan saw the ball fall to Ryan Long who set up Callum Williams who blasted wide of the Cowes goal. Jordan Browne then saw his header fly straight into Callum Maher’s arms in the Badgers goal. It was the New Forest side that took the lead in the 7th minute when a ball over the top was not defended by the home side and RYAN LONG tucked the ball past Ed Hatt into the Cowes net. The Islanders should have equalised on 13 minutes when a John McKie cross found Jared Wetherick at the far post, he won the ball and set up Jordan Browne who should have buried his shot, but blasted well over the bar.  John McKie then saw his shot go wide as Cowes began to dominate, another John McKie cross found Jared Wetherick who chested the ball down to Jordan Browne, but again the shot flew over the bar. Matthew Casey then saw a shot from 25 yards superbly tipped over the bar by Ed Hatt in the Cowes goal in a rare venture forward. Ollie Wilson fired wide before John McKie’s effort was saved well by Callum Maher, Jared Wetherick then had a shot blocked for a corner. Finally, in the 36th minute, a corner from the Cowes left saw JORDAN BROWNE equalise off the crossbar. John McKie then had another shot saved by their keeper before in injury time Keelan Sainsbury’s cross was headed back by Jared Wetherick to Jordan Brownes header hit the top of the crossbar.

H-t 1 – 1

A great start to the second half as the Yachtsmen took the lead in the 47th minute when a shot from John McKie was pushed onto the bar by CALLUM MAHER, but the rebound was pushed into his own net by the Brockenhurst keeper. The Badgers drew level on 55 minutes when another ball over the top of the Cowes defence and as Ryan Long challenged Ed Hatt the loose ball rolled into the path of DARYL PHILLIPS to net. Ollie Wilson then had two efforts at goal, the first saved and the second flew over the bar. Keelan Sainsbury’s corner was headed on by Jared Wetherick and found skipper AIDAN BRYAN sliding in at the back post to restore Cowes’ advantage. Another Keelan Sainsbury corner was headed goal-wards by Jared Wetherick but was cleared off the line by a defender. Then came one of the most bizarre moments witnessed in football. John McKie was shown a second yellow card followed by a red card apparently forward “showing dissent in public” as he slapped the ground after not getting a free kick when fouled. A ridiculous decision from Referee Peter Lowe that in the end was to cost Cowes dearly.

Cowes came close to a fourth goal when Jordan Browne’s shot was saved before Ed Hatt kept his side ahead denying Ryan Long. The Referee then managed to find SEVEN minutes of injury time, which nobody knows why so much, from which in the sixth minute RYAN LONG netted from close range to force an extra 30 minutes.

Sixteen year old Oliver McArthur, who had came on for Ollie Wilson towards the end of normal time, tested the visitors keeper before Dexter Malin fired wide in what were the only real chances during extra time, until the very final minute, when Cowes had a corner from which Brockenhurst broke catching the home side short of numbers at the back and RYAN LONG completed his hat trick to send his side through to a Quarter Final tie at either Romsey Town or Totton & Eling. Definitely a chance missed by the home side.
