Division Three – Saturday March 12th 2016

Cowes Sports ‘A’ went to the top of the league after beating Pan, as Wootton were being held at St Helens. In front of a crowd of between 50-60 people at Seaclose Park, the young Yachtsmen came away with the points in a must win game against the league favourites.

Cowes started the game on the front foot and took an early lead, after just 5mins, with a well taken goal from RYAN FLYNN. Pan responded quickly and were soon level after the youngsters were caught out by a long ball over the top which their forward controlled and tucked away past Wilfred Armfield. Pan then took the lead in the 15th minute when the visitors failed to close down their midfield and allowed their full back time to knock over a quality cross which was met by their forward to put his side ahead. Once in front the only word to describe Pan’s tactics was brutal. They started to intimidate the young Cowes players by kicking them off the ball , wrestling them to the ground and unbelievably Cowes were at fault according to the Referee! Credit though to the young Yachtsmen as they were still playing the better football and deservedly equalised before half time with another goal from RYAN FLYNN.

H-t 2 – 2

Manager Russ Chapman gave his  team a stern talking to at the break, as several players were not committing to challenges and were standing off our opponents. The team responded well in the second half and became less intimidated and let their footballing skills do the talking. Several chances were created early on in the second half and the lead was regained on hour mark when RYAN FLYNN broke clear, rounded their keeper to score, thus completing his hat-trick. Pan’s tough tactics finally caught up with them on 75mins when they had a player sent off. As a consequence Cowes began to find more space and creating the chances to finally kill the game off, but it was Pan who nearly equalised.  Their substitute turned and hit a shot from the edge of the box which looked like going in, until the long outstretched arm of Wilfred Armfield parried it away to safety. He was also brave enough to quickly get up and gather the ball with boots flying in at him. Pan then had a second player dismissed with 5mins to go and the points were secured in the 89th minute when RYAN FLYNN tucked away a cross from Nicky Vyse to score his and Cowes’ fourth of the match.

This victory coupled with the draw between St Helens and Wooton saw the ‘A’ team climb to top spot in Division Three as shown below =
