Semi Final – Tuesday April 19th 2016

played at Westwood Park

Russ Chapman’s young Yachtsmen graced Westwood Park for this Junior ‘B’ Cup Semi Final against Shanklin ‘A’ whom they had drawn with in the league a few weeks earlier having led 2 – 0 at half time on the day.

Gareth Bricknall continuing his comeback from injury was first to have a chance at goal but his touch was a bit heavy allowing Adam Priest the chance to save. Alex Boirand saw his cross come off a defender and back to their keeper with Nicky Vyse challenging. The young Cowes side were dealt a blow on 12 minutes as prolific goal scorer Ryan Flynn was forced off because of a niggling injury, Matty Champion coming on. Nicky Vyse set up Alex Boirand but effort went wide. Shanklin’s left back then showed their threat as he ran at the Cowes defence before setting up Jason Smythers who fired well over the Cowes crossbar. Nicky Vyse once again provided another opportunity but Gareth Bricknall’s thunderbolt of a shot hit the underside of the Shanklin crossbar bounced down, possibly over the goal line(some said it was over the goal line whilst others said not) but the Referee was unsighted and the ball was cleared by the visitors defence. Jordan Whittle them tested their keeper from distance but the save was made to look easy by Adam Priest. Finally the deadlock was broken when Matty Champion chipped a cross to the back post where NICKY VYSE was on hand to head home the opening goal for Cowes ‘A’. Nicky Vyse then turned provider in the 40th minute when his shot from distance cannoned of their crossbar and back down fore ALEX BOIRAND to head in the home sides second goal four minutes.

H-t 2 – 0

Early in the second half a terrific ball into their area from Jordan Stacey saw skipper Jordan Whittle thump his shot against the woodwork. Jordan Whittle then done well to win the ball back off a defender before playing it into Nicky Vyse whose great footwork created a goal scoring chance, but unfortunately he blasted the ball well over the bar. With the young Yachtsmen failing to kill the game off, Shanklin began to gain in confidence and created a couple of chances for themselves, Jack Smythers again firing over when well placed before Cowes keeper Wilfred Armfield got down well at his near post to keep his side two ahead. Shanklin continued to press but rarely threatened the Cowes goal and the youngster held on to progress to the Final at St Geaorges Park on Tuesday May 10th, where they will meet the winners of the Kyngs Town v Seaclose Semi Final due to be played on Saturday 23rd April.
