IoW DFA Saturday League

Division 3 – Thursday April 21st 2016

played at Westwood Park

With four games in a week to play, Cowes made several changes to the side that had progressed to the Junior ‘B’ Cup Final on Tuesday night. Cowes started brightly and should have taken the lead on 5mins when Nicky Vyse got in behind their defence and squared the ball to Gareth Bricknall. Unfortunately the ball bobbled as he hit it, which took it wide. Kyngs Towne were making it hard for the home side to break them down as the youngsters were struggling with their passing and movement with and without the ball, whilst also continually giving the ball away. However, the visitors never really threatened the home goal but Cowes hit the bar and forced their keeper into making a couple of good saves. Eventually the Yachtsmen did take the lead when,  just before the break, a ball into their box was met with a powerful header from ASHLEY BRETT into the visitors goal.

It was hoped that the youngsters would improve in the second half having gained the advantage late in the first half. However,it was just one of those games when you have to grind out the result. The best move of the game came on 70mins when Cowes eventually put a string of passes together to create space for Gareth Bricknall to shoot. With the ball heading for the top corner  their keeper pulled off a fantastic save to keep his team only one behind. Shortly after, Kyngs Towne had their Captain sent off for a second bookable offence, but they did manage to hit back on the break in the final few minutes, but fortunately the shot went over the bar and the three points were in the bag. Although everyone know they can play much better, at the end of the day it was a clean sheet and 3pts in the bid for promotion.

Team: Rupert Bowles, Lewis Insley (Alex Boirand-65mins), James Whitewood, Jake Cass (Jordon Whittle-45mins), Connor Mumford (Dan Flux – 75mins), Nicky Vyse, Ashley Brett, Jordon Stacey, Will Sharp, Jordon Chapman, Gareth Bricknell. Subs not used:- Matt Champion & Fin Ray.

NOTE:- The ‘A’ team game v Rookley due to be played on Saturday April 23rd which had been switched to the Recreation Ground was in the end not played as Rookley could not raise a side, therefore the three points were awarded to Cowes Sports ‘A’ leaving them needing just one point from their remaining games. Promotion could be achieved at Brading Town ‘A’ on Tuesday April 26th.
